If I were a printer I would be confused

Color Profile Abundance in a PC (not a Mac)

I’ve just noticed that there are too many Color Profile directories on my computer. I just wonder if it is healthy to have information repeated at all these places.

I know for a fact that I only placed my paper profile; 3800 MC Luster.icm into
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color
at one time only, but now I have them all over the place.

Is this normal with the 64-bit Windows 7?

These are the Directories:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Color\Profiles
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Color\Profiles
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color

For example this profile is present in all three directories; Pro38 PLPP.icm What if one of the profiles is corrupted and the printer happens to pick that one?

I think this is crazy to have these profiles with different dates and sizes all over the place.

Any ideas?

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Color\Profiles will be the programs profiles that are 64 bit programs.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Color\Profiles will be the programs profiles that are 32 bit programs.
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color will be profiles for your printer.

Unless you have a problem just leave this stuff alone.

Thanks Dan,
I do/did have problems with very dark prints.
So you say that paper profiles like the 3800 MC Luster.icm should only be in:
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color
How about the other Epson paper profiles like the Pro38 series? Should I delete all those in the other directories?

I kind of agree with you Geoffrey and I can't help thinking that colour profiles should be better managed and accessible to the user - and more easily editable.

For no apparent reason a while back my favourite RAW editor started to apply awful colour adjustments on opening an image. I checked the profiles it was using and found that a Canon printer profile had been associated with my monitor! This must have occurred when I installed an updated printer driver, and without any warning or permission being asked. Crazy!

Rodeo Joe,

Let me a vent a bit. These days a lot of things are senseless. Windows 7’s two sets of Program Directories, two sets of System32 (SysWOW64), etc.
It makes a bit of a sense, NOT: System32 handles 64-bit programs, the SysWOW64 32-bit ones!?! Huh?!?

Also I cannot understand why Adobe took out the preview image from CS6. It is very easy to overwrite an image if you don’t see what it looks like. But wait, there is Mini Bridge that cannot function until the Main Bridge is launched!
Adobe just could have copied the ACDSee v3.0 (1999) interface where you can toggle easily between the image itself or a view of the thumbnails in the directory, switch directories, etc.
Then I cannot open a TIFF image in PS RAW from Bridge, I get a stupid note why is that, but I can open it from the Mini Bridge.
Oh and Lightroom! Fantastic program, but it is too cumbersome to import/export all the time. Brrrrr! It could just deal with DNG files as well, like all decent RAW editing programs. If you want to deal with catalogs, knock yourself out, but it would be nice to have choices.

My question came about, because somebody (with a Mac) solved his dark print problem by deleting duplicate profiles. Seems like duplicating is an Apple problem as well.

I just fixed my printer, but looks like after each Windows update I have to see if I have to reinstall the printer drivers again and again….

Sorry, I feel better now,
