scott_ferris
Just for fun, here are the qualifying points for Canon photo gear for their CPS (Canon Professional Services) program in the USA, though other countries work differently.

There are three levels, Silver for which you need 10 points minimum; Gold, 20 points; and Platinum for which you need 50 points minimum, and $500 per year! There are other factors for qualification too but I just thought it might be fun to see what points people have, or not.

Some interesting seeming anomalies, to my eye at least, a 30D and a 1VHS have the same value at 2 points each, as do the old and new TS-E 24's at 8 points each. My backup camera, a 1D doesn't even get a mention and they won't work on it through CPS. A 1Ds MkII, a fantastic bargain for FF use and functionality is rated lower than a 5D MkII, that 1Ds MkII was $7,000 new and is just one generation ago of top pro level equipment.

Now some people might suggest that all pros regularly replace their gear, my experience is that most use it until it can't be fixed, and that is often several generations old. I know a few 70-200 f2.8's that were bought and have been very heavily used since before the MkI IS version was available, their owners wouldn't dream of replacing them until they die.

Anyway, have fun, Scott.

Cameras

EOS iangillett
Scott, Very interesting to see the 'scoring system'. In Europe I think there is a bit more to it than just the number of points you have (at least in the UK). On the numbers you have listed I have a points score of 168, but just have Gold Membership because my top bodies are a 1Ds Mk iii and a 1D Mk iii - for Platinum Membership I would need to have a 1D Mk iv (I am not sure how much I would have to pay). pjmeade
The 85/1.8 isn't supported in the UK, but they do include some flash guns, like the EX 580 Mk2.
For me, the usefulness has been in rapid turn around of repairs.

photodiscoveries
Curious...on the site, there is no place to enter your camera bodies when you sign up. But the site states that ONLY your registered items qualify for service and discounts. So, is this a lens only program?

scott_ferris
Ian,

When I worked in the UK you had to provide tear sheets and all kinds of references. You make me feel very inadequate with my 79 points! It makes me smile though, you can have two 1D MkIIn's a 400mm f2.8 MkII (non IS) and a 200 f1.8 and not qualify for entry level!

Peter,

Yes the USA site does give you points for some flashes and wireless transmitters, and a few other bits and pieces, video cameras etc. And I agree the turnaround times of two days for the Platinum level are the main reason I am rejoining, along with 60% off repairs and six clean and checks a year free. Though the USA gear loan/try before you buy situation is very good too and I will be taking full advantage of that.

Phil,

I am sue the next lens will come, but that will mean the $500 is even further away :-)

DeLoyd,

No it is a full system program, I don't know why you are having problems, but if your bodies are in the list above they qualify.
jamespjones
I find the logic of how printers figure in bothers me a lot. The new consumer printer has some kind of point value but my large format iPF6100 does not. I know the reasons (the different divisions of the company) but as a consumer it makes no sense.
bob_howdeshell
73 points here, but very happy with my Gold CPS memebership for $100.00 ... Not sure that I could justify the $500.00 platinum price tag.
