brian_prestemon
Can anyone confirm the news that Nikon has reduced the allowed selling price of new D700's down $500 to $2199?
Given this is true, how fast and how far down do you think the used D700 prices should/will fall and how soon?

Thanks for any input.
Dave Luttmann
Well...it's been available in Canada for the last year at $2299....so I'm not certain where the camera is being sold at $2699. I paid $2299 at Lens and Shutter in Victoria. Vistek, Henry's Lens and Shutter and Kerrisdale cameras all sell it for $2299 in Canada.

B&H photo in NY lists it at $2199 currently...so it appears that's the price.
bob_sunley
Well if it was "official" price drop, Nikonusa.com probably wouldn't still have it at $2,699, but nikon.ca have it at $2,499. so...

Nikon USA has it for $2199 just like B&H, Adorama, Amazon, and probably all the other big stores.
http://shop.nikonusa.com/store/nikonusa/en_US/pd/productID.213426600
daverhaas
It was originally $2,999 (US) at introduction - then it went down to (I believe) $2,299 in late 2010, and then back up again after the earthquake and increased demand. So now it is $2,199 - which is what Refurbished ones were selling for a year and a half ago.

Dave

henryp

how fast and how far down do you think the used D700 prices should/will fall and how soon?

Part of what determines a used item's price is what the retailer paid to buy it from the person who used to own it. That amount won't change for in-stock used merchandise if a new item price does.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video
Henry Posner B&H Photo-Video

ShunCheung
Prices are determined by supply and demand. Unfortunately, whatever a used camera dealer paid for an item really doesn't matter. If the new price has dropped, they may have to sell a used camera at a loss if they want to move it. Holding onto it won't help as prices will only go further down; it will only increate the loss. However, when you sell a used item to a camera store, they typically pay about 50% of what they expect to sell it for. Therefore, it is unlikely that they will actually lose money on that deal, anyway.

The new $2200 price is apparently from Nikon USA. The D700 was around $2300, 2350 back in 2009 before the yen appreciated a lot in the last few years. It looks like people are snapping up those $2200 D700 very quickly. Therefore, those who still have it in stock are actually selling them around $2500 or so for now, but the prices fluctuate quickly.

P.S. The US$ has appreciated a bit against the yen in the last week or two.
jon_porter2
D700 bodies are currently selling in the $1,700-2,000 range on eBay. So in the coming weeks the average selling price may be closer to $1700 than $2000. Or not. Anyone's guess is as good or better than mine.
Peter_in_PA
Thom Hogan also reports that the 700 has NO MAP, meaning that dealers can sell new ones for whatever they want.

Could be interesting. I'm guessing that they are only saying that it's a current model because they have gobs of some expensive part (maybe the sensor) that is only used in this one currently manufactured camera, and when those are gone... so are the D700s.

Thom is also now entertaining the notion of a successor/upgrade from the D7000 being the next "pro" DX camera and the replacement for the D300 being an FX camera, in essence the D700 replacement. That's been my thought as to the way Nikon might go for a while.

He's been right before, and he's been wrong before... so we'll see...

rossb
Probably just moving out the old stuff for new models..The D700 has the banned batteries so Nikon probably wants to move on from that model anyway.
jack flannery
I think that is what I paid for my old, crappy, wore out D700 from B&H a couple years ago.
rossb
yeah, I paid $1250.00 for my D200 and then the dump the rest of them price was $700.00. I still have it with about 8000 snaps on it. Mostly the old thing sits in the closet. I was going to try and give it to my son if he would take it, He might like it to take photos of rock bands.

vince-p
This price for "new" is largely theoretical because no one has any. Akin to Leica's 0.95 Noctilux lens. It sells used for considerably more than its retail price because it's impossible to get one.
