screw size on x1.4 extender

After increasingly erratic focus issues involving a 1.4X canon extender I find that the screws holding the front plate have been migrating who knows where and only one is left out of four. Lucky really because the remaining one was loose as well. Anyhow Canon parts diagrams give a part number but no specs and those on my 2X extender look exactly the same . I'm guessing there's a cheaper option than buying 4mm approx screws from canon so if anyone knows what exact size these are I'd be grateful, Cheers

Unfortunately, I've had this problem as well, though instead of losing a screw, it simply jammed the mount and bent the flange badly enough it needed replacement.

Canon is usually pretty generous with the parts pricing, so I would recommend you get them from Canon so you can ensure that you get the exactly right part. Screws have so many nuances (the shape of the threads, the thread pitch, the material) that buying them yourself from another supplier is probably asking for trouble.

You could try to match the thread and size of the JIS screws... good luck w/ that ;-)

Seriously though, getting 'Canon brand replacement screws' is probably a far better idea. Your extender could be damaged if you mismatch the thread pitch, or mash in an improper head size/shape. C'mon - The shipping will likely be more than the price of the screws... I'd probably order a few extra to be on the safe side though.

Also, I'd use a bit of threadlocker instead of trying to torque the heck out of the new screws. easy, safe, and it'll prevent the problem from re-occuring.

Thanks gents. Not sure where in the world you are - I'm in UK and although Canon service has improved dramatically in the past few years a bad taste still lingers from amazing incompetence in the past. I'll give them a try tomorrow and cross the fingers, Cheers Derek Simpson

After 15 minutes being passed around Canon UK's "customer service" numbers I was directed to a third party repairer. A very personable and intelligent lady at Colchester Cameras asked all the right questions of myself and a technician and could offer a set of screws from the MkII for £5 +vat. I'm hoping the design did not change. Colchester Cameras will order the parts from Canon and forward on to me. Convoluted ? just a bit but who am I to tell a Global Giant where it's all going wrong. Well actually I have previously corresponded with the top man in Japan but for four screws I'll let him get on with his work. Didn't half get a reaction from Canon UK that time though!
