<p>I can't directly answer your question, as I have not used the combinations you mention. But I can tell you something about the 17-55. It's been my most used lens for about three years. I've also owned a few L zooms (17-40/4L USM, 24-105/4L IS USM, and 70-200/2.8L IS USM), and the 17-55's optics are comparable to those of the L zooms. I hope that's at least a little bit helpful to you.</p>

As I understand it. IQ of 17-55mm and 10-22mm are similar to L glass.

Major difference is in built quality.

5d2 much better IQ than 50D. That been said. Must people out in the real world can't tell witch camera produced what from two 8x10 prints set

side by side. Only when you start to enlarge upward of 16x24 or go to 1600 ISO or higher you can c defferece.

<p>On paper, the 5D combo is better, but in real world use you may not reach the point in which you can tell a difference. And once you do reach that point, there's the issue of whether that difference is acceptable or not. We don't know your intentions so we can't say whether the 50D combo will be "acceptable" for you, but in most cases it is a fine tool and a perfectly capable camera. </p>

<p>A 50D and 17-55 f2.8 gives the equivalent of a 27-88 f4 on a 5D. That is for the same sized print, or sized image on a screen, of an identically framed subject shot from the same place, the way most people take pictures, the 5D and 24-70 f2.8 would give you shallower dof and shorter zoom range, the 24-105 would give you the same dof, a greater zoom range and have IS, with regards IQ unless you are using a tripod and manually focusing via live view there is no difference between the three lenses.</p>

<p>I have used the 7D+17-55 combo and I have to say I prefer the 5D2+24-70 combo better. The 5D2 combo has better color rendition and detail in good light. In bad light, it's not even a competition. the 5D2 wins hands down.</p>

<p>That's not to say the 17-55 is a bad lens, but it's just not as good as the 5D2 +24-70.</p>

I used the 50D and 17-55 combo for a year before upgrading to a 5D2. As long as you don't shoot above ISO 640 and

print larger than 11x14 you would be hard pressed to see a significant increase in quality from the 5D2 and an L zoom or

prime. of course the 5D2 buries the 50D at larger print sizes and higher ISO. With that said, I'd consider the 17-55 the

optical equal of the 24-70. The FF CMOS is the reason for the better IQ of the 5D2. If I were looking to squeeze in closer

to the IQ of the 5D2, I'd pair the 17-55 with the 60D or 7D. You'd gain another stop of useable high ISO, better noise

control and a wee bit more Rez.

<p>No. They aren't equal. I shot w/ a 50D w/ 5Ds and then 5D2s. As PF pointed out, noise is a HUGE issue on the 50D, but theoretically, the IS available would allow you use lower ISOs. In practical terms however, I found that the change in <em>effective</em> DOF was a HUGE difference. If you shoot landscapes a lot maybe that's not a big deal, but since 99% of my work is w/ people, the DOF difference impacts my work every day. </p>

I have the 17-55 on a 7D and the 24 - 105 f/4 on the 5Dmkii - so not an exact match to the posters question, but I find when looking at my photos I am drawn much more to those coming off the 5D.</p>

<p>Some combination of the tone/color just appeals to me more. I am guessing, but I would say it is close to a 70/30 split towards that 5D combo even when I have shot similar scenes with both.</p>

<p>No numbers to back it up but for me there is a clear preference.</p>
