What photography gear should I bring on my trip to Europe?

I am studying abroad soon and taking my first ever digital photography course and will also be doing quite a bit of traveling. I have a Nikon D60 that I plan to bring and learn to use better. But what are the essential gear/accessories that I should have? I want to travel fairly lightly...

What are you planning to photograph? Hard to say without knowing that. I almost always take just two lenses, a wide zoom and a fast 50, mostly for night shooting. I like to shoot close to my subjects, so that covers it. On the other hand, you may shoot differently, and without knowing, any recommendation is just a guess.

Another vote for the 16-85mm VR DX lens and one fast prime of your choice. I suggest you consider the 35mm f 1.8 G DX. It is small. light and takes great pictures. Just make sure it is fully compatible with your D -60. Definitely take a small tripod that fits into your pocket. And make sure you know how you are going back up all the images you are going to take. Joe Smith

Good suggestions above. To add:
Be sure to take plenty of memory cards, and a few (2-3) spare batteries. You also may want to consider bring a small point&shoot as a back-up, or for times you don't want to carry the DSLR... I usually carried my DSLR. But a couple times, going out to a quick casual dinner at night, it really was cumbersome. Plus, the new P&Ss have some decent video modes for the quick causal impromptu video... not a major thing. But occasionally with moving things, it captured fun moments (train/bus rides, people performing etc.)

Take care, and safe travels!

What do you want to spend on all this? You seem to be a student. The 16-85mm lens is expensive - it's a consumer grade zoom with a build quality upgrade - so if budget is a concern at all the Sigma 17-70mm OS lens is just as good for $200 less. The 35mm 1.8 is a very good lens if you like shooting in lower light.
