frank_caruso1
Well, I've just bought a vivitar flash and I don't know if it was a good choice. I've got Vivitar Series 1 DF-293-NIK, for instance I thought it was a good flash but then when I started to watch reviews about Nikon SB-700 I realized that my flash wasn't as good as I thought, I've started photography one year ago so that my teacher told me that it's a good model to begin. I hear comments and suggestions.
PS: My intention was to buy Nikon SB-700, but the person who had bought it, (I don't know why) decided to brought this flash, since I'm not from USA, i can't change it.
plangereis
If you are shooting Nikon, then the SB700 would be nice so you can take advantage of the ETTL capabilities. I shoot with two manual speedlites (Lumopro 160s). They have served me well in portraiture, and I will use them in conjunction with some studio strobes I happened upon (family). I guess I am trying to say that the main consideration is the flash's power, and zoom settings. The Lumopros are very adjustable in terms of both power and zoom, as well as 2 slave modes. I use them almost 100% off camera, with stands and shoot through umbrellas. You make things work. Good luck.
frank_skomial
Since you have the supposedly Nikon compatible flash, try to use it and see if it satisfies your shooting scenarios.
You may never discover your flash limitations, or incomplete compatibility, if there are any ?

Listening to reviews is good before purchase. Most likely you will be happy with your flash, untill you grow out of its capabilities, like your teacher told you "... it's a good model to begin", and you are just beginning with it. For Nikon brand flash, perhaps you would pay much more $$$.
bebu_lamar
I just checked price and the Vivitar is $89 and the SB-700 is $340. Checking all the specs, I would certainly pick the Vivitar for my own use.

rodeo_joe1
Just use it frank and stop fretting about it. The money's spent now, isn't it? If it doesn't do what you want, then you should consider upgrading. If it does, then it's money in the bank.
jcuknz
Your flash may not be as good as those around and costing much much more but nothing to sneeze at and a useful tool ... stop thinking that more expensive gear is better gear .. you are the important factor in taking photos. learning to utilise what you have to its fullest potential is one of the things a good tog does.
miss.annette_leigh_haynes
Please spare me all your reviews and other nonsense take your Vivitar and the Top of the line flash according to the worthless reviews to a good Camera shop with a good flash meter at different ASA’s and different distances and you will know which is better end of subject. I use a Nikon 35mm with Vivitar 283 I Love it.
