It's been a while since I started one of these.

I was down in New York for my sisters birthday last weekend, and it coincided with the Conflict Zone exhibition. Some of the worlds best combat/war zone photographers works were on display in beautiful large format prints.

And my sister, testing out what -hopefully- will eventually be her own helmet. She is taking the firefighters written exam for the FDNY next month. If she scores well enough, she takes the physical portion over the summer.

There are very few women on the FDNY as firefighters (medics don't count, different test, different skills) and she has to take the same test as the men (rightfully so). The test changed a lot in the last 15 years from when my friends were training for it. No more useless pullups and such, it's all functional testing.

The Stair Climb (75lb vest)

Hose Advance (50lb vest for entire test)

Equipment Carry

Forcible Entry

Ladder Raise/Extension

Search Rescue

Dummy Drag

Ceiling Breach and Pull

Pretty bad ass for a 120lb chick...thank god for big brothers that never let her win! Now if she just spells her name right on that written exam.

I have some cool cityscape at sunset photos taken with a Pentax 645N and Velvia 50 I want to share, but haven't scanned them in yet (no transparency scanner, and didn't ask photo lab to scan at time of development); so those will have to wait another week or more. In the meantime, another shot from the November (not that long ago right?), from Mohonk Mountain House... this winter has been so mild, I feel like I'm not cheating by posting these late Fall shots ;) Again, spring is around the corner (in the US anyway)

I forgot to mention I picked up a FA 31mm over the holidays. My favorite lens. Great performance; love the feel of the lens. Been using it to take lots of family photos, I need to make it downtown and take it for a spin around the city.

Love your Pleated Woodpecker there Patrick. It's always a good day of bird photography when I can catch one; of course I don't have Spanish Moss draped in my images of them!
Cold morning (25 F/ -4 C). I got up early this morning to see what I could find in our local park here in Carmel (IN) and dragged the 600mm A +1.4X-L along for the ride. My first find of the morning was a pair of Red-Tailed Hawks, one stayed around for a few photos
The a Meadowlark. Later in the summer these just disappear in the tall grass.

Finally I'm always impressed with Bluebirds. Since they eat insects (I think) I always wonder how they get through winter, but boy am I ever glad that they do.

Nothing much else, a few Mockingbirds, a little waterfowl, lots of Red-Wing Blackbirds. Time to warm up.

I had a gig shooting some Yoga at a new studio at our local college. Challenging lighting and layout in that dungeon for sure, but I was allowed to set up some strobes. I had one bouncing off a reflector on a stand to the right and my dg530 super bouncing off the ceiling. I would have liked to have more light on the left in this one but it came out ok I think.
K-5 & Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
<a title="IMGP0648.jpg by MattB.net, on Flickr" href=" IMGP0648.jpg src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7183/6890098463_135947cb84_z.jpg" alt="IMGP0648.jpg" width="640" height="424" />
.
My son did the school talent show on Friday and got second! He's in third grade and was competing against 4th and 5th graders too. We're very proud!
He played Elanor Rigby. They had the piano in a different spot off stage and it was a tough lighting condition and I was not using a flash.
K-5 & Tamron 28-75 2.8

One of the other competitors:

Douglas, it was Patrick that took that nice shot of the pileated. Bluebirds in winter! I'm jealous. We don't get any bluebirds at all.

Yesterday I was the invited guest artist for a US Forest Service winter photography program. I joined a small group of hearty snowshoers into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area. It was 30 degrees F, overcast because we were in the midst of a very wet heavy snowfall that ended up dumping at least 10 inches. We were up about 3600 feet in old growth fir and hemlock forest. So peaceful and meditative. Only saw a Douglas squirrel as the snowshoe hares were hiding out from the fox and coyotes and owls.

I was happy to have brought the K20D and a handful of DA Ltd. primes (15, 21, 35, 70mm). The camera got drenched over the many hours we were out but it was a non-issue. It was easy to snowshoe around with that small hardware.

Here are a few shots on the quick:

No snow here and birds have been few & far between. It's been pretty mild (so far) but still recognizable as winter.

I got myself a DA 35/2.8 Macro Ltd for my (upcoming) birthday. I like it and have convinced myself that it's sufficiently distinct from the FA 31/1.8 Ltd to justify keeping both.

Mostly, I've been shooting basketball with the Sigma 50-150/2.8. I've been able to get pretty decent results most of the time but in some cases, the lighting is an insurmountable obstacle and the best I can do is 'Norman Rockwell' rendering--like this.
