Overheard today at a Hipster Clothing Store....

I don't know the answer to this, but it came to mind. What is the environmental impact of manufacturing and processing film relative to going digital? Both digital and film cameras have some environmentally challenging electronic components (batteries, metals, etc). The printing process would be fascinating to look at considering ink jet printers have a lot of consumables and sometimes short lives. It'll be fun to see if anyone has looked into this. Of course, it's even more fun to speculate.</p>

<p>Glad to see this sparked a conversation. At this point it's just great to hear people under age 35 are shooting film and keeping it alive. Of course more people will choose digital; it's more convenient. I use it often too, but rarely get the thrill I do from processing a great roll of Tri-X or Delta 100. It's perplexing to me that with sales numbers what they are, Digital proponents feel the need to bash film. Perhaps they're bit upset that it's Not Yet Dead? ;)</p><div></div>

<p>Perhaps what you mean by bashing is different than my understanding. I don't consider discussing actual sales figures or even giving anecdotal stories concerning how hard it is to find film or processing to be bashing.</p>

<p>Perhaps it is that I use both film and digital that I am missing these attacks. Perhaps that I can continue to do photography by any method I chose(excepting Kodachrome and Ilfochrome) make me less aware or less caring about the film vs digital arguments.</p>

<p>I get all of my clothes which are so un-cool, they are cool again from local charity shops. Like the black velvet jacket I bought yesterday to replace one which I gave away to a friend after it had inexplicably shrunk a couple of sizes whilst hanging in my wardrobe for a couple of years!</p>

<p>It always amazes me how the digital trolls still check out the film forum to bash on someone who is just making an observation about young film users. You'd think after all these years they would grow up, but I guess not.</p>

I think hipster and abercrombie don't work in the same

sentence, but that's another story.

 

I know loads of people under 35 who use medium and large

format camera's (processionally), and also people that are

over 35. Also know a few labs that print analogue

exclusively. Where I live there are about ten labs within 30

minutes from my house that process film, and I can find film

in as many places.

 

I don't think film is replaced by digital in every area, for

some people digital makes sense, for others film. I know

mostly artists and documentary photographers and for both

these groups of people film makes sense.

 

I don't feel like film is disappearing at all.
