Hood for Nikkor 35-70mm f2.8 D

A solution and a question here. I have just acquired a Nikon 35-70mm f2.8 AF D lens. It is outstanding. I notice numerous posts - all over the place on the inadequacy of the supplied HB-1 hood. Other hoods are often suggested for use on DX Nikkors. But the problem remains that it is often inadequate for FX use. Other hoods tend to vignette at 35mm on FX sensors.
It is lamented that the hood is not a petal design which would solve a number of problems.
Here is the solution http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/hoods/Nikon-AF-Zoom-Nikkor-35-70mm-f-2.8-D.php
A template for a petal hood. Cut out the hood from black plasticard and fix to the original HB-1 with cyanoacrylate. You can jazz it up by spray painting black and affixing black flock paper to the inside surface or use black felt/velvet to minimize reflections. I have just mocked mine up and it works beyond belief. I may make another using brass shim.
Thats my solution. Question is, does anyone have knowledge of an off the shelf hood which works for those of us with a scissor phobia?
Incidentally there are many templates for hoods on this site.

Doesn't the front filter thread (and hood bayonet mount) on the AF 35~70/2.8D rotate when focusing? If so, that's the reason the HB-1 hood is not a petal type.

My 37-70mm f/2.8 D also flares easily, it's the only bad aspect I can point out on this lens. I persist with it as I use it less nowerdays and when I do it's the 'hand held out in front of the lens to block stray light' method for me.......

At 70mm the hood is barely of any worth, at 35mm it is a piece of plastic bling on the front....... :-(

I haven't had any problems with veiling flare in the 35-70/2.8D AF Nikkor, just using the stock HB-1 hood. Even ghosting flare has been fairly uncommon unless I shoot directly into bright lights - emergency vehicle lights at night when photographing fires or medical emergencies, or into the low angle sun. I will see some distinct multi-colored ghosts, but not veiling flare.

If you're shooting into the sun, such as for sunrises or sunsets, sure, you'll probably prefer another lens. No lens hood will prevent ghosting when the light source is directly in the frame, or just outside the frame. Only a better optical design and multi-coatings will solve that problem.

I realise this is a very old discussion, but just in case any of you guys are subscribed to updates, I thought I'd share my experience. I too, have a 35-70 AF-D, which I picked up used a few months back. In normal conditions, it was great. I'd heard it would flare in strong light, but what I found was a severe case of 'veil' flaring where the entire image looked foggy if I had a light source in the frame or shot a backlit subject.
I'd heard about potential issues with one of the composite central elements in which the cement decays over time and eventually leads to delamination, causing veiling flare. I sent mine to Nikon UK to be checked over/repaired. According to the service report, they replaced "G9 lens assembly and G10-G12 lens assembly" They also cleaned the other elements and checked infinity focus.
Got it back now and it's much much better.....
