Camera to use for fashion or portraits

Hello, I wanted to ask if anyone was using cameras other than Nikon or Canon for pro level work. When I shoot I either use Nikon DSLR or Mamiya and HAsselblad digital for both fashion and portrait work but i'm getting interested in other brands. There are cameras out now from both Sigma and Sony that offer lots of pixels but I would hate to spend money just to find out if they are worthy or not. I'm hoping someone here is using any of the mentioned cameras or anything else actually.

Thanks for your support.

Hi Eddy,
There are some brands available... the point is that not the camera is important but the system where you enter. A camera is a temporary tool... especially these days. The glass and flashes are more important. You need to make sure that the system provides to you a good selection of lenses and other stuff that meets your requirements and you have space to grow.
After shooting Nikon for years I could not migrate to a different system just because I like very much their CLS system, the wonderful AF module and the compatibility with old glass. I can't find enough honey to a different system to give up to these things. But this is me. You probably are different.

Hi Igor, are you using a Polaroid for professional work? I like the black and white image you have posted was that shot with a

Polaroid? What type of camera is that? How big can you print those images. I've tried some polaroids in the past but the scans don't

really provide size and quality.

Maybe back to the roots? Decelerated workflow with a view camera, loaded with a Tmax 400 b&w film? Or for finest details Ilford Delta 100. It'll blow away your mind if you haven't shot film for some time :-))

Worry is like a rocking chair.

It will give you something to do,

but it won't get you anywhere.

Jens, I used to use large format but the clients demanded a faster and less expensive medium so I moved to MF digital. I still shoot LF for my personal stuff but not for clients. It's hard enough to get them to wait for the gallery on line much less processing film.

Ken, I saw Ben Kanarek's work on line and it is very impressive. I use a Mamiya RZ with both film and digital back for work and I have used a Pentax 645n in the past.
Thanks to both for your input.

Eddy,
I use polaroid for magazine work, it looks very good scanned. You can scan or reshoot polaroid
and enlarge it as much as you want. I use mamiya rb/rz with pola back. Paolo Roversi is famous for working with polaroid.

You can shoot professionally with just about any camera -- remember, it's the photographer, not the camera. But most photographers shooting for a living -- not all but most -- stick with the dominant brands, most obviously Nikon/Canon in 35mm/digital and Hasselblad/Mamiya in medium format. It isn't a matter of whether these are "better" than Sony, Sigma, etc., but rather that they have the most extensive range of lenses and accessories both themselves and from third parties, and are available everywhere. A photographer shooting Nikon or Canon can buy, rent or find repairs for his/her gear in just about any major city in the world. That might be not true for other brands, and rental -- very important when a very expensive but rarely used piece of speciality equipment is needed -- is essentially non-existant for other brands. Both also have (or at least used to have) special expedited repair/service programs for profesisionals. Same goes for Hassy/Mamiya on the MF side. And as mentioned above, once you have tens of thousands of dollars invested in glass/flash/accessories, you don't change systems on a whim.

I want to thank everyone here for all of their coments and advice. I think the bottom line is no one is using anything

else other than the main brands as I suspected. If anyone is using another brand of camera please don't hesitate to

send me your link and your thoughts.

Thank you very much and as always it's been a pleasure.
