Mystery problem writing RAW files from CF Card to PC

Recommended Posts

Is anyone else having issues writing/copying their RAW files from their CF cards to their PC's?
I'm on a windows 7 , 32 bit system.
I use photoshop cs5 and all adobe updates are current.
I have had an issue with the most recent windows update patch being unable to complete but my husband who's an applications manager and former helpdesk slave seems to think that the update problem is more of an obstacle to the true source of the problem and not the real cause .

What happens , whether I copy/write my RAW files from my CF reader installed in my PC (to a folder in my C: drive that is backed up regularly) or if i take them direct from my Canon EOS 50D, is that random image files are totally corrupted.

I can then go through every blessed image that's corrupted, take it off the card and copy/write it to a new temp folder on my desktop, mostly the files come up fine when i do that. The images are fine on the card, it's something in the writing/copying process , going to the C drive mainly.

Please please any ideas, anyone else going through this?
IT is way too ridiculous to adopt this as a way of working . There has GOT to be a solution.

When a Windows update doesn't install cleanly, it's natural to be suspicious. You don't have any way to know what problems it might cause, and not just with your photos. I suggest that you attack that problem first. Typing the error message into Google is a good way to start. On earlier versions of Windows, I would suggest looking in the Control Panel "Installed Programs" to see a list of Windows updates. I don't have Windows 7, but a similar procedure is probably available.

I had the same or very similar problem. I do not know exactly what is the root-cause, but my suspicion it is HW rather than SW issue. Most likely, it is the grounding somewhere in the system. I found out that to fix it I need to mount the card as an external disk and visit it with Explorer, or, even better, with the Bridge. I guess this causes charge refresh on the card. Usually this fixes it. There was one incident when this was not enough - I ran "check disk for errors" on the card and that was it. My impression is the problem depends on the humidity levels: it happens more often in summer than in winter (I'm in California).

Yes--check this posting http://www.photo.net/canon-eos-digital-camera-forum/00YCtg
I suspect that it is Norton Antivirus in my case but have no solid proof. This is only an issue if I move a large number of files. I use a card reader that is part of the PC (no cable). It does not affect the jpg preview so I don't notice the corrupt file until I open the RAW file.
