Help with my Quantum Flash?

Recommended Posts

I purchased my Q5 less than a year ago, it runs off of a Turbo Battery, and to it I have a Twinlink reciever connected and to that the Receiver is connected to my D700. I was told to run the Q5 on the TTL mode with my Camera.

Here's the problem: I can go to take a photograph and the thing won't fire. It will fire just fine for several shots then suddenly it will not fire. It seems to me that the amount of light in the images is quite inconsistent. I try to play around with it during down times during a wedding reception, but I'm growing very frustrated with the thing. I do believe that it would be a powerful tool but I've read through my manuals, synced everything accordingly and still come up with the results of it not firing for several shots and then all of a sudden it does. Does anyone else ever encounter this problem? If so, have you resolved it? I'm curious to know if it might be something as simple as replacing my twinlink for something more powerful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don' know this twinlink product. I doubt,if I had to bet on it, that it is NOT a failure of your fairly new Q flash. Or a weak Turbo if all the power lights are on... If the flash fires with its test mode button, then I too like you would suspect a faulty radio linkage. Or the cord connections from the RF link to the H plug on the Q flash, they get dicey too. Wild guess time for me.
Try a direct flash cable connection,do a similar series, and if you still get lousy or inconsistent results in TTL or AUTO mode on the flash, then I would sure see about (warranty?) evaluation by Quantum Instruments. I wish you well. Nice flash, solid battery. You have I assume a TTL cord for Nikon. Try that and see what gives sans RF triggering...
