alexacatalin
Hi!
My Canon 40D broke down yesterday. I have no idea what's wrong with it, the image is shacking everytime I'll press the shutter.
This is how it looks:
I'll take the camera to a Canon service tomorrow, but I thought maybe somebody can have an idea about it.

Thanks!
PuppyDigs
Looks like you wore out the shutter curtains.
Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
jamie_robertson2
Yup, the shutter has exploded. It can be repaired but get a quote first. Try to resist firing the shutter until it's fixed or you may cause further damage inside the camera.
nathangardner
A new 40D may be more affordable. A replacement shutter can be expensive. I'd definitely get th quote first, but I'd start thinking about plan B. Selling your current one on ebay for parts and putting that money towards a new one will probably be your best plan of action.
jim_h.2
If you get a canon rep to fix it versus canon themselves it's Been about half the cost in comparison the one I used quoted 300 buck for shutters and labor and then it , Was good as new they also let you mail the camera to them if your far away,I figured the cameras are still selling for about 1grand used so new shutters for 300 was a deal and I have shot 16k shots since then. orly_andico
ebay item number 350354406026 is a 40D/50D shutter for $53.

if you're handy with tools you can replace the shutter yourself.

i took apart an old 300D to remove the IR hot mirror (and fix the broken submirror pin) and I had to get past the shutter as part of the process. I do not believe replacing the shutter is that hard. (and the 300D still works, even though it was the first time I've ever taken a DSLR apart)
bobatkins
For most people, replacing the shutter themselves would cost the same as a new camera, since that's what they'll probably end up needing to get. It is most certainly a non-trivial repair, though I'm sure it can be done if you are adapt at small device repairs.

Either get the shutter replaced professionally, or sell the broken camera on eBay to somebody who thinks they are capable of fixing it and buy another one. If you're looking for a good used 40D, send me email as I might know of one.
richard_barry6
Upgrade. My old camera's a 40D and it consistently presented a saga of problems. I know others in the same boat too. Abort :)
nathangardner
Just so you have an idea of the cost difference, 40D's have been hovering around $500 on eBay lately and consistently going for under $500. Whether that's a good thing or not you can decide. It is depressing to see your camera depreciate, (we all know it will happen) but it also means a replacement is cheaper. picturesque
It depends if you need the mirror box replaced too. Just the shutter runs around $300-400, I think. For an otherwise good camera, it is worth it--it is a known quantity. But add the mirror box, and you're up to $500-600 plus. Then you need to make the decision.
alexacatalin
It looks like it was only the mirror. Still, they asked me like 270 Euro to replace it. I'll have to fix it. It hurts, but I need the camera.
Thanks for the tips!
