Diffraction - another lesson learned

Recommended Posts

I just did a test to understand how my 50mm 1.4D Nikon lens behaves for sharpness at different apertures.
I have been wrestling with how to achieve those super crisp images - without much luck despite using a tripod and timer.
I was under the impression that smaller aperture was directly related to crisp focus. My tests this evening prove that wrong. I have discovered "diffraction" and its' negative effect on focus at the aperture gets smaller.
Here are my images.
