tomscott
This may be one of those questions that has been asked before but I haven't been able to find an answer so far. Is the auto-manual switch on an SMC Takumar lens supposed to move? I have the 55 f1/8 Super Takumar that the switch will not move from the auto position. The SMC Takumar is fully automatic aperture for open aperture metering so it works just fine with it in the auto position but, was it designed to move or is mine just stuck. I have a 28 f/3.5 Super Takumar that has the switch and it is moveable. I understand that the Super Takumar has to be used with stop down metering, but the Spotmatic F has a switch for this purpose so I just leave the switch on the lens in the auto position.
tomscott
I meant to say the 55 f/1.8 SMC Takumar has the switch that won't move. The 28 f/3.5 Super Takumar switch does work.
tony_lockerbie
Quite correct. The later SMC Takumars had the auto/manual switch locked, as they were designed for the open aperture metering on the Spotmatic F etc.
Still works with the older SP, just turn on the meter for DOF preview.
jean_yves_mead
Does it move when mounted on a body? The later lenses have a small locking pin protruding from the rear of the lens which locks the A/M selector; this is pressed in by the camera body to unlock the switch. tomscott
That's interesting. I found the pin and can push it manually and the switch moves but the the F body has a groove machined into the mount so that the pin will not be pushed when the lens is mounted.
cj8281
Same thing on the Pentax ES II.
As for the SMC Takumar lens, it has its own group on flickr http://www.flickr.com/groups/1588707@N21/
There are several versions of this lens with the last one being a K-mount. I have the 55mm ƒ2 version.
lewis_hizer
That is exactly how it is supposed to work. When you mount an SMC Takumar lens on a Spotmatic F, the machined groove keeps the mounting flange from pressing the tiny pin in, which would otherwise release the switch. The Spotmatic has no groove, and the flat surface of the flange pushes the pin in as the lens is screwed into place, releasing the auto-manual switch.

The Super-Takumars have no pin and the switch is always free to move on any body.

The SMC Takumars have the pin, and the switch becomes free to move on a Spotmatic but not on a Spotmatic F, where it doesn't need to.
