Fujifim X100

I tried out the Fujifilm X100 in London a few days ago and was mightily impressed, so much so, that I decided to get one. I've placed an order with Amazon and have been put on a waiting list. Of course, production was disrupted by the earthquake in Japan though the latest news from Fuji is that production is now going ahead. But I have no information or idea about wait times. Is anyone else in this forum in the same position and do they know any more? Meanwhile I'll have to make do with my M8!!

Was told that four made it to Vancouver Island two weeks ago, and I was lucky enough to get one. Lately there's been one for sale unopened, at inflated price on a local buy-sell site. It seems scalpers are around and ready to profit from all the hype. The camera's not perfect, no camera ever is, but it gets a lot right.

High ISO results appear to be better than my D300 by at least a stop. With the f/2 lens and silent shutter it's a superb available light camera. It's so light and compact that I've been using it alongside M Leicas and DSLR with long lens.

They will be around soon enough. I probably will never even see one as there are no camera stores anywhere. If they make a model that has interchangeable lenses at the $1200 price Leica will be in trouble.

Some enterprising characters out there are selling them for upwards of $1800 on e-bay USA, that's a full 33% above the announced MSRP. Unfortunately, they are selling at that inflated and ridiculous price. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth as I don't like, and can't really afford, paying though the nose. The Fujifilm is a beautiful camera certainly, but is also has a fixed lens. Its rumored that two new models are coming, including a exchangeable lens version--and if so perhaps they will catapult over the competition and become the leading mirrorless camera. Then we will all be wanting one.

Lots of good camera ideas don't see the market because they are not projected to sell in high enough quantities (Leica M is perhaps an exception to that, but that affects their selling prices). Getting sucked into the availability versus price curve is ridiculous. It's like ticket scalpers. It might be worth it once in a while, but not frequently. The X-100 is a well conceived camera, but has shortcomings, too. In view of the same sensor size + MP count competition, it is a little overpriced. as is the Leica M. At $900, it would be a fine buy I think.

Just wondering if those compaining 'this much money for a Fuji' realize that the Hasselblad H system (and its lenses) are made by Fuji.
Not to mention the Hasselblad X-Pan and a slew of medium format folders from 20 years ago that were considered to have some of the best lenses on the medium format market.
I've had a chance to do some testing of my X100 vs the 20mm F2.8 I used on my Olympus Pen (my previous street camera). The Fujinon lens has much better resolution (to be expected with the larger sensor), but also a noticeable contrast improvement (more and smoother) and is sharper at the edges.
This is one excellent lens.

Fuji has always been known for its stellar optics. The Fuji medium format rangefinders, and the large format Fujinon lenses set the standard. Fuji was also a huge hit with their S2 Pro digital SLR camera. I don't see why this new X100 won't sell like hotcakes for a couple of years too. People want large sensor compact cameras, and this is the best fixed lens example I've read about yet. At $1199 it's on the high end price wise compared to the competition, but then again you're paying for a very nice retro-looking camera so the higher price is justified. If Fuji had just made it yet another black plastic camera that looked like all the rest of them, I doubt they could get away with charging this much. And it certainly gives the Leica X1 a run for the money, the X1 doesn't even come with a viewfinder and relies on the LCD screen.
