Happy Thursday Canon folk! Tomorrow will be the first day of April and this weather is no doubt fooling us (here in Louisville, KY). This time of year the signs of spring are usually all around, such as the flowers blooming, the grass turning greener, the birds singing, and the cops dust off the motorcycles, however, it has spit snow for the last three days and I'm none too happy about it. I guess if the weather is the worst I have to complain about then I should be thankful. So let's see all those springtime, or not so springtime photos.

As promised last week, I have a photo from Monday morning's venture with the University of Louisville rowing team. I had a great time spending the morning with the team and going out on the Ohio River with the girls (from the relative comfort of the coach's motorized boat). It was a crisp 40 deg. morning and you can subtract about 75 deg. once you get on the river. I had several photos with the Louisville skyline as a backdrop, but I like the way this photo with the clouds and the wide angle showed really how small the boat was in the massive river.

00YUAI-343787684.jpg.e04fbc60d540c08787a935436b0a67f3.jpg

So driving round Horicon Marsh again at the weekend, these odd looking ice formations caught my attention. Spring is slowly arriving and it was fairly warm, although trying to snow sproadically. I took numerous shots, both wide and long, and liked this one the best. It was only when I got home that I figured what was causing them (the cold must have numbed my brain). So I assume the water freezes, get snowed on, and snowed on, and snowed on. Spring comes, water runs off melted snow from tree down to lake surface. Snow covering the ice melts. The lake ice melts and you're left with the wonderful and delicate works of art hanging precariously in mid air, 6-8" above the water.
rgds,
james

00YUAL-343787884.jpg.4c37a5fe1898ed0886099b7702f8d060.jpg

Saw this guy sitting on the rock above from the trail and since all I have is my 15-85 I couldn't really get that close of a shot as I wanted. Fortunately there was a way to get down. He wasn't to weary about my presence and just seemed to be content to sit there. I slowly got closer and closer taking pictures. In the end I was probably 4 feet away before he said that was enough and flew off down below to another rock. This was taken in Cambria I believe.

A few comments:

Nathan - Nice wide-angle effect stretching the boat.

Jeremy - Quietly compelling composition.

Daniel H - Great frozen action shot.

Brad - Cool sky. Sepia effect?

Spencer - I like how you composed this.

Here is a recent photo of the Guggenheim Museum in New York taken on a very clear day.

00YUBi-343819584.jpg.19cee434f746b717623b2e9d41919df2.jpg

Here's a curious Sand Hill Crane for this week. I was about 30 feet(10meters) away from him, downwind, his mate was about 20 feet further away behind him. I think this is the closest I have been to a bird of this size. I was so busy clicking and composing, I forgot how formidable that beak really is. I just re-sized the shot. no cropping.

00YUEF-343871584.JPG.da01b7e4ee0b5d16450bfbb569bd93e5.JPG

From the island of Florianópolis looking toward the mainland of Santa Catarina, Brazil. It was a very hazy day and rendered a very washed out scene so I just let Picasa auto-adjust everything. I like the effect for a change.

00YUEq-343885584.jpg.d1940450ee75d539fcdb89cc3322a6de.jpg
