Capture NX2 keeps crashing

I know that other people are experiencing this problem with the software and that Nikon are determined to ignore complaints. However, I am increasingly frustrated by it. The only solution that I can think of is to set up my PC so that when I want to use Capture the computer only loads Capture to allow it to use the maximum amount of memory. I am using Window 7 Pro with 4Gb memory but don't know how to set this up. Can anyone help?

Can you describe your drive configuration (from which drive you're loading the app, on which drive you're accessing/writing image files, and which drive you're using for NX2's cache files)? Are any of your drives hanging off of USB ports?

Frank,

Sorry to be blunt, but this idea will not do much and all in all, Windows typically knows better how to handle memory than users. Either way, the maximum amount of memory a 32-bits process can handle is 2GB, no matter what you try. You have that amount of memory, so no issues in that.
It also assumes that something else on your PC is causing the crashes, or a lack of memory; a bit too early to assume that. Just to be sure, CNX2 updated to the latest version, or better, a completely clean re-install of the latest 2.2.6 version has been done?
Otherwise, I'll follow Matt, he's asking the right questions.

i'm sorry to hear about all the problems the OP and all those "other people" are experiencing with NX2 -- but my experience is very different. that makes me wonder what's up with frank's system.
i'm also running Win 7 -- but it's home premium, 64-bit version with 3gb RAM. i occasionally lock up the system, but that usually after i've edited about 50 photos in one sitting, or come back after the system has gone into suspend. in short, i have none of the issues being reported.
i'm not saying that i don't believe the OP is having issues, but i doubt there's anything inherently wrong with NX2 under windows 7 that explains his problems.
windows has a number of tools for chasing down the causes of errors and crashes -- check the control panel/performance information and tools and "view performance details in event log" for what the system detected about any problems. sometimes the real culprit is not what one thinks.
if i had to take a wild-ass guess, i would say the system has a flaky memory module. if the system has a diagnostic partition with a memory test, i'd run that before doing anything else.
barring that, i'd look for a software conflict -- there are too many potential culprits to name, but one can easily prevent a module from loading at startup by using the system configuration utility -- typing "msconfig" at the command line and checking out the startup tab.
solving system crashes takes some effort, but when approached methodically one can usually find and eliminate the cause.

I totally agree with William, I also run Windows 7 in 64bit mode, no problems what so ever with NX2 ..

Sometimes it realy helps to install a good spyware scanner though, and run it, and have it fix whatever it finds...

I have positive experience with "spybot Search and destroy" , "Super Anti Spyware" and "Malware Bytes Anti Malware" which are all Free to use ( and more xtended verions if you also register for a few $ ...) . These programs got 100th's of hits when i ran them on an almost brand new PC and freed up loads of memory that way....

I was experiencing the same symptom after I upgraded my PC to WIN7 Ultimate (64bit) with NX2 2.2.5. Nikon USA was not helpful at all. BUT, when 2.2.6 was released, it resumed the smooth operation. Someone already asked you, but again, have you upgraded your NX2 to 2.2.6?

Subject: Capture NX2 keeps crashing
I had this exact problem with nx2, I run win7 64bit pro and after much frustration and eons of searching finally discovered that by clicking on the program file, not the shortcut ( c:\ Program Files (x86)\Nikon\Capture NX 2\Capture NX 2.exe ) right click on the file choose properties, then choose the compatability tab. Select run in compatability mode for Vista SP2. This fixed the problem instantly and has never reoccurred, 12 months of peace :-) I think it may be because Nx2 was not designed for 64 bit- not sure about whether Nikon has ever looked seriously into this, but the problem is every where on the net and Nikon's silence on the matter has been deafening. Hope this helps you.

00YRSg-341513684.jpg.c2005e6b2ef7360bb4f30c5b7cfdd183.jpg

Frank, I am using NX 2 ver 2.2.6 without any problems on two win 7, 64 bit machines, and one older xp pro laptop. Both of the win 7 pcs have 4 GB of Ram. The xp pro machine has only 2 GB of RAM.
You have to set cache settings correctly for NX2 to run optimally. There are two different settings, both found at Edit, Preferences, Cache. One is browsing cache. The other is edit cache. For edit cache you have to specify the location (hard drive) and the space. If your NEF files are on a dedicated drive, like D, you have to tell the program this. If you do not, it will look for them. The default is probably the same place where you loaded the NX2--C: program files/etc.
If these are set properly, and things are still slow, you might have something else hogging your RAM, like multiple anti virus programs, etc. or malware infection.

I run Capture NX2 on a 64bit HP computer with 8 gigs memory and a dual core Intel processor. I didn't make and specific adjustments to accommodate NX2. In nearly two year it may have crashed once. If you are having constant crashes then I suspect it has nothing to do with NX2--it's how your computer is configured.

I have tried all the suggestions that forum members have very kindly made and the software still crashes or tells me my date format is wrong! The date setting on the PC are ok having checked them a number of times.
Given that I am not the only person experiencing difficulties with Capture, and I do appreciate that there are people with no problems, I have written a letter to the MD of Nikon UK.
Now I do appreciate that sending a letter through the post in this age may be seen as a bit odd but I suspect that it will at least elicit a written response after due reflection and investigation by the MD of Nikon UK. Basically I outlined the problem and asked that he raise it with his head office, presumably in Tokyo.
I should also say that the tech guys at Nikon UK were very helpful and I have no complaint there and I have made this plane to the MD.
I am a fan of Nikon kit otherwise I would not have bought variuos primes (including two PC lens) and two DSLR's.
When I receive a reply I will post it on the forum for everyone to see and comment on. Watch this space!

Update to my last post. No response from Nikon UK which is very disappointing. I would have expected the courtesy of at least an acknowledgement but not even that. This is very bad news for Nikon owners.
I will try sending the same letter again with a cover note this time by recorded and signed for delivery. It could be a postal problem but given their deafening silence on this issue I am not confident.
Question: If they are prepared to ignored this issue with Nikon owners what otther issues will they ignore? Can we rely on Nikon in the future?
I will post again next week.
