kerry_murray1
Hi there

I use a Nikon D700, have had it a year or so now and it has never given any significant problems until recently. I went to download a card and the card didnt show up on my Mac, didnt read it at all. Tried another card, showed up fine. Same thing on a PC. Then I formatted the card (in the D700) Didnt help. So I figured it was the end of the road for that particular SD card, luckily the photos weren't important, so I figured, could have been worse.
Then, put a new card in the camera (the same one that read fine on the Mac and PC earlier) shot a few test frames and tried to download it... neither computer could read the card. So now i'm thinking the camera is doing something to the cards? Images show up on the D700 screen, everything appears normal while the card is in camera but it doesnt register on the computers... What's going on? Should I be freaking out? Please help!

Thanks for your time.
Kerry
Matt Laur
What are you using for a card reader, hardware-wise?
dan_brown4
Are you using an external card reader? Or, the tethered camera? Are you swapping the card reader from the Mac to the PC? Just wondering if it's the card reader?

Also, are you using some kind of SD to CF card adapter in the camera? The D700 doesn't accept SD cards.
eric friedemann
Kerry, the D700 uses CompactFlash (CF) cards; not SD cards:

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25444/D700.html#tab-ProductDetail.ProductTabs.TechSpecs

Are you using a D7000?
kerry_murray1
Hi, Sorry, its a Compact Flash, not an SD... my bad

Im using a Delkin multi-slot card reader, my first thought was that it was the card reader too, but it read the one CF perfectly until after I put it in the D700.
frank_skomial
D700 takes Compact Flash cards (CF), so the ability to corrupt SD (Secure Digital) cards is very unlikely.

If you use an adapter to plug SD cards into CF camera slot, stop doing it. Just use CF cards.
kerry_murray1
thanks, as i just mentioned above, i mistakenly referred to the SD card, but i am actually using CF... i have changed the name on the original question too.
alan_bessler
Did you reformat the card before you tried it again? I reformat the card everytime I use it, it could now be corrupt and needs replacement.
kerry_murray1
I did reformat the card, as mentioned in the original question, but it still didnt read. I also format everytime I shoot, and I also thought that it was the end of the road for that card, no big deal.
the problem is that the same thing happened to the next card, which had been working perfectly 5 minutes earlier, but after I put it in the camera, shot a few frames and then tried to download, it had the same problem...
douglas lee
Can you download directly from the d700 via cable? If so, perhaps it is the reader. Just a thought.
jay_poel
Format the card IN THE CAMERA and do as Douglas suggests and use a USB cable between the camera and computer and try to transfer. Not sure if you were formatting with the card reader or not.
kerry_murray1
took me ages to find the cable, since i've never used it, but that didn't work either... so clearly its not the card reader. But thanks for the suggestion.

Peter_in_PA
Years ago I used a D1 that did this. Never did figure out why, and it only happened with a few cards.

I would say double-check for bent pins, but then it wouldn't work at all.

Can you try a different reader?
kerry_murray1
@Peter. I dont have another reader here, but will nick one from the studio. Also thought of the bent pins and checked, but they seem ok. I'm pretty sure the problem isnt the reader though, because it will read a card that hasn't been in the D700 recently (I also shoot with a D300 and a D200 as my back-up body)
carl_becker2
You can see the images on the D700 using the view button so the files are there. What drive letter is the USB using. I have seen USB devices not like deeper letters like H, I ...
See if you can change the drive letter for the USB to D or E.
kerry_murray1
@Carl: do you mean drive letter on the computer? Because it doesnt even show up on the comp, its as if I havent plugged anything in. I have tried different cables, but for now only have the one card reader. I have also tried to connect the camera directly to the Mac, also didnt register anything, not even reconise that something had been plugged it. Once, there was a little warning pop-up screen that said "the computer doesnt recognise the drive you are attempting to read" I paraphrase, cant remember the exact wording... but it never showed up again with all the other attempts.
wpahnelas
how old are the batteries in your D700? are you certain your unit is getting sufficient power to perform write operations or USB communications? i also would try a reset, and perhaps even reloading the firmware, as the problem does not seem to lie with either cards or reader...
kerry_murray1
@Wiliiam: Thanks for your response, not sure how old the batteries are, as I have 3 Nikon bodies all using the same batteries, all bought at different times, but the battery wouldnt have anything to do with the card not reading in a card reader. How do I do a re-set? That sounds like it might help, but i've never done it before.
carl_becker2
I use Windows with a card reader. I can see the usb reader (F:/) with or without a card in it. I have seen usb devices have a hard time when the drive letter is deep. I fix the problem by changing the drive letter manually or removing devices ahead of it. If your Windows PC does not see the usb reader I would start looking there. First thing would be to check the usb conection and change usb port, then a reboot. If that does not work then see if the reader can be seen on a different computer. I rarely tether my D700 to the computer as I have caught the cord with my foot once. I don't think the body or card is bad if you can see the images on the body LCD. That means the files exist and can be read, at least in the body, they are not corrupt.
nicolaiecostel
I own 3 SanDisk CF cards and I use them in my D700 but I never had any problems. Nor did the studio I work for, with 3 D700 and a buch of cards.

However, my boss had a problem with his D3, using a Lexar card. Lexar cards are know to fail, OEM cards even more so, after he trew the Lexar he never had any problems.
I had a card-corrupting body, a Nikon D70, he destroyed a SanDisk Ultra2 8 GB, but the guys form the customer service told me that the D70 must be used with low capacity cards because it will destroy 8GB cards (they had several cards with this problem from D70's).
Lastly, some cheepo card readers are rumored to destroy memory cards, so keep this in mind also.
Cheers.
scott_murphy_photography
What kind of cards are they? I have used both SanDisk and other cards with my D700, and the one cards I have never had problems with are the SanDisk ones. I pull the cards each time and insert them into the hardwired CF slots in my Dell. Never had any problems
stevenseelig
I had a similar experience with my D700 and it turned out that the card reader and not the camera was corrupting the cards in such a way that was very nasty. It was a Belkin card reader which they replaced for me for free after about 5 years of use.
hungnguyen
Kerry,
My Mac (laptop) never seemed to have read the CF card in my D700, even when I am using the cable (the card does not pop up on the desk top). but all the applications like iPhoto, Aperture and Graphic Converters all read the card OK and can download the pictures, as soon as I plug the camera in, is this the case with you?
