bob_king2
Canon has announced the 600D/T3i - it uses the same sensor as its predessor but includes the tilt/swivel sceen from the 60D and external Speelite control from the 7D. The 1000D/XS line is not dead, the 1100D being the latest incarnation.
http://www.dpreview.com

Cheers, Bob
tom_burke3
On first sight, there doesn't seem to be much difference between this new 600D and the 60D.
paul_russell1
It is coming down to the penta-mirror vs penta-prism.
I rather think that for the people who this issue matters to, and the other things like lens and af adjust, pc synching, weatherproof construction, will already be using a 7D rather than a 60D anyway.
If only Canon would update the 7D firmware to permit manual audio recording.
PuppyDigs
The 60D has 9 (all) cross AF points whereas the 600D has a single cross and 8 single axis points. This means a big difference in AI servo, low light and off- center Focus performance. Also, the 60D has a faster FPS, larger/brighter VF, additional external controls and a top deck LCD. I think the 60D is a little larger and sports a more contoured grip, making it easier and more comfy to hold. Save the CMOS and LCD, they are pretty distinct. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
jim_larson1
But the big news is that the sensor is unchanged. The last camera that came out with the same sensor as it's predecessor was the 30D. . . . .

. . .perhaps this is infering some attempt at stability in the sensor market as the focus shifts from MegaPixels to Video mode. I think we have a definate vibe on what the 7D-II is going to look like, right?
geoffm
This should probably be called 550Dn, rather than 600D!

One change from the 550D is that the rear display no longer switches off automatically when you raise the camera to your eye - you have to push a button to turn it on and off. This seems to me to be a seriously retrograde step!

bernard_odonovan
For the target market this is a very useful and time saving feature (video snapshot, removes the need to edit after as preset clips are sequenced together):
http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/samples/eos600d/player_snapshot/movie.html?low
