Mike_R1664876643
I have a trip to Las Vegas coming up in mid March, and want to take a couple days to drive up to Zion and Bryce. What kind of weather can I expect that time of year? I've been to Zion in August when of course it's fairly hot. Any other places nearby that I should try to see while I'm in that vicinity? I had thought about going to lower Antelope Canyon - have always wanted to go there - but that may be too much for the short time I have.
bob_sunley
Snow at higher altitudes according to google. Google " bryce canyon march weather " the NPS says March is our snowiest month for Bryce Canyon.
waltflanagan
I've been to Bryce and Zion in late March before. Bryce was around 10 degrees F in the morning and maybe warmed up to 30. They clear the roads but there was snow all around. The picnic tables were covered in 3 feet and a lot of the trails are closed. The overlooks were all open. I was in Zion 2 days later. It felt great around 50-60 degrees.
aaron l
Expect it to be quite cold at Bryce, as the park is at a high elevation. Expect snow. Do not speed in the park! Here are some sample shots from Bryce:
http://aaronlinsdau.com/usa/utah/bryce/bryce.html
If you really want the best, go along HWY-12 in Utah...you will hit Canyonlands, Capital Reef, Grand Staircase Escalante, Natural Bridges, Arches....of course, you won't have time to do all of them. They're worth every minute.
Mike_R1664876643
Thanks. Those are some great shots of Bryce Canyon. I'm surprised it's that cold there in March. I guess I always think of the desert as being hot, only having been there during the summer months. Another option I was considering (instead of Utah) was to drive to Death Valley for a couple of days.
bob_sunley
The rim of Bryce Canyon is between 8,000 and 9,000 feet, makes a huge difference. :)
User_2000406
Bryce is not really desert. It just looks that way due to the geology and relative lack of vegetation on the eroding areas. There are desert areas close by, though.
aaron l
Actually, DV can be quite cold, too. Especially at Race Track Playa...it's at a fairly high elevation. The Panamints will still have snow. You can see my Death Valley shots here:
http://www.aaronlinsdau.com/usa/california/deathvalley/deathvalley.html
You can't go wrong with either!
