brian_hirschfeld
I'm going go be shooting some art work in studio with strobes and I was wondering what the Shaprest aperture for Nikon PCE 85mm f/2.8 would be? Thanks,
eric_brody
I do not have the 85... yet, but do have the 24 and 45. It will be at its sharpest 2-3 stops down from open, eg at f/5.6 to f/8. With digital, one starts to get diffraction at the smaller apertures like 16+ though I have gotten excellent results at f/16 with my 45 mm PC-E. If you really want to know, put a piece of newspaper on the wall and shoot at different apertures and see for yourself. Again, with digital, it is pretty easy to do this for your particular lens if it really matters to you.
Good luck.

mark liddell
I don't have it but 5,6 would be the best starting point based on other nikon primes.
bjørn rørslett
I'd say it's a toss-up between f/8 and f/11. It's excellent already at f/5.6, but the subjects you shoot often demand a little more depth of field than this setting can provide.

Like almost any Micro-Nikkor, f/16 is outside the range of maximum performance. Still acceptable if you work at the highest magnifications, though, but for reasons not related to max.sharpness.
Lou_Meluso
I tend to use mine between F/11 and F/16 more often than not. Here at f/16.

dan_brown4
Louis, that's a very cool picture, creative idea.

BTW, with my 85 PC Nikkor, I feel confident about sharpness anywhere form f5.6 to f16.
