yuresa_lin
Just got my leica IIIF and want to replace the beam splitter myself.
There're some repair manuals on-line:
http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-154.html
http://www.pentax-manuals.com/manuals/service/leica_iiif.pdf

I encountered a problem during the removal of winding knob. I had unscrewed the setscrew of the knob (without removing it as described, but why?), then the knob could rotate freely. I turned it counter-clockwise, however it can't be pulled off.
anyone give me some help?
mukul_dube
Try loosening the screw just a little more. Leaving it in is, I think, the best way to keep it from getting lost.

I had trouble replacing the mirror of a IIIc. The thing was too small for me to handle easily, and the piece I got was a little larger than the size needed so it had to be rubbed down. I am not good at handling very small objects.
yuresa_lin
OK I took out the screw completely, and the knob was still there it can't be pull out!
When I first saw the procedure I thought it's super easy, and now I'm stuck here...
mukul_dube
I think you have to reach in through the bottom of the camera and prevent the shaft from rotating while you turn the knob anti-clockwise.
yuresa_lin
I though about it, but I don't see any rotating shaft.
mukul_dube
The thing on which the take-up spool fits. If there was no link, there would be no way to advance the film.
yuresa_lin
I mean the shaft is not rotating, nothing in the camera is rotating when the knob is turned counter-clockwise. Camera works great though.
Maybe I should send it for a CLA.
mukul_dube
Sorry, I cannot help if I do not understand. It seems that you should entrust it to a technician to set things in order and replace the mirror.
karl_bryan1
Did you check to make sure that there was not a set screw underneath the set screw? I have found several IIICs that had 2 set screws. Also, the knob unscrews counter-clockwise. The film advance ratchet prevents the shaft from rotating counter-clockwise so you should be able to unscrew the knob after you have gotten it loose. Sometimes the knobs are on very tight (corrosion or an over zealous camera tech) and I have also had to use a ring wrench (or if the knob is pretty beat up a pair of pliers) and apply a fair amount of force in order to loosen the knob.
yuresa_lin
There's no screw underneath the set screw on my IIIf.
I tried to use some force, but the knob was still VERY tight.

yuresa_lin
No matter the set screw was completely out or "left in place,", I failed to pull out the knob...
