80 Gigapixel picture: long live the film

<p>I had to dig deep to find out that this 80 Gigapixel picture was in fact caught on film. Hearing Gigapixels conjures up digital cameras.</p>

<p>A very impressive photographic endeavor, indeed. Must take some computing power to stitch all that together...</p>

<p>Forget the computing power, how big is the freaking file size?</p>

<p>But yes, pretty sure it would need a very beefy computer. I don't see why you would shoot film. Seems like the workflow would be faster with digital.</p>

<p>While the Fujitsu hardware used seems impressive, I wonder about the software.<br>

If I am not mistaken Photoshop max size was 32000 x 32000, and that is just a bit over one Giga pixel.</p>

<p>I am not even sure what that 80 Gigapixels mean?Is that some kind of digital equivalent?</p>

This image was not shot on film. Brian M, where on earth did you see any reference to the idea that it was shot on film? It was shot on a canon 550d.<br>

80 gigapixels refers to how many pixels are in the image. You might be familiar with the word "megapixel" which is used to quantify the number of pixels captured by digital cameras. A one megapixel image is 1000x1000 pixels. This London image is 400,000 x 200,000 pixels.<br>

The size limit of images in photoshop is 300,000 x 300,000 pixels (not 32k x 32k) so yes, this did present some challenges.<br>

On a totally unrelated note, I had forgotten my password in order to long in here, and I was very alarmed to see that passwords on this site are stored in clear text in the database. I know this because my password was emailed to me. This is a terrible practice, and I thought a site as popular as this one would know better. Sites should NEVER store passwords in the database, and they should NEVER send them through email. If photo.net would ever get hacked, every password of every member would be there, out in the open.<br>

Since probably this will never actually be fixed on photo.net (I'm sure they know about this already after so many years) I urge everyone to not use a password that bears any resemblance to passwords you use for your email, banking, or any other important website that you use.</p>

<p>Jeff, what kind of head are you using for the tripod? A motorized unit of some sort?</p>
