problem using FH-3 film holder in Nikon Coolscan 5000

Recommended Posts

Been trying to scan a negative using the FH-3 film holder this evening (because I want to capture some detail on the long side of the negative), but either the scanner doesn't detect the negative even to perform a preview, or it won't perform the full scan.
Scanner worked OK just before when I used the SA-21 film holder.
I can't say that I'm exactly sure how you are supposed to load the FH-3, but I've tried a number of different ways by now, and it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Any ideas, anyone?
Thanks,
Martin

Martin, how have you been trying to use the FH-3? Are you sliding it thru the MA-21 slide holder mounted to the 5000? If so, then make sure the neg. you want to scan is showing thru one of the windows of the Fh-3's metal face! I use the FH-3 for most of my scanning with the "4000" and find it works well as long as the film is flat. Hope this helps.

I think I did all those things (used the MA-21 and placed the negative so it showed through one of the windows of the FH-3).
A few times I got thumbnails, but when I clicked on the button to make the full scan, the scanner just kind of burped and gave up.
The scanner's working OK, because I was able to scan normally after switching to the SA-21 auto-feeding negative holder.
I want to use the FH-3 so I can get more detail along the long side of the negative.
I'll give it another shot over the weekend.
