Mixing commerical and Exhibition Art on my website

Recommended Posts

Hello,
I have a website at the moment. I use it to promote my commercial photography business, portrait photography business photography and weddings.
I am also an exhibition art photographer, and am considering having a section to sell prints as well on the site. Do you think the two conflicts with each other? I recently thought this might be the case, but have recently rethought this, as many non photographers generally view a photographer as a photographer. Any views would be welcome.

Not sure what you meant by that.

I knew many pros living two lives: their pro work pays the rent and their personal work feeds their passion. If I were in such a situation, I would have two separate sites for their own purposes to attract different clienteles.

Of course they conflict. What has commercial to do with weddings? Very little unless you shoot for bridal magazine.

Do non photographers have an interest in commercial? No.
Portraits and wedding photography go together, but I would certainly separate out the commercial unless you want to be known as a "generalist" photographer, in which case little commercial work will come your way.

80% of my work is editorial with 20% rounding out in the commercial arena.
My clients and potential clients do not care about what (I) like to shoot or my artsy interpretations and pretty pics; they want to see how my work will translate to the printed page. You need to do the same if your goal is to get shooting jobs.

Maybe my definition of "commercial" work and yours are not the same.

If you think they conflict, why not simply get two separate websites? I agree with Kevin that separating out the commercial pics might be the best way to go. If nothing else it'll make it easier for you with SEO and pushing your sites to your target audiences.

Websites are so cheap these days that it just isn't a big deal to have several.
