trish_o.
I took this photo a few years, and a friend said I should enter it in a children's photo contest. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Marcus Ian
Yes, you never know!

From a critical standpoint though, I'd say that while it does work, there are some areas you could certainly improve:
Flash - too strong, it blows out the flesh tones in the face so that there is less visible definition. Maybe even a good idea in an older model, a young child has very little to lose.
Focal point - the DOF is adequate to have both eyes in precise focus. Even if you only used a single point AF, and a shallower DOF, more precise control of the focus and recompose would be able to give you both eyes IF. (in this case, I'd have suggested focusing on the contrast under the nose/ or lips)
The rest is style, it's up to you to define it!
mukul_dube
What does the photo say about the child? Nothing except that she's pretty. Flash far too strong, I agree.

gdw
Trish, unless the contest is being held by a photography group you are asking the wrong people. Only photographers will be interested in whether or not the flash is too strong, whether areas are blown out, or whether both eyes are in focus, or the shadows are in the wrong place or the arm is cut off at the wrist. People that judge cute baby contests are only interested in how cute or how cute a thing the child is doing--they will not be looking for conventional photography wisdoms or even at photography. Generally if the girl in the photo looks like one of the judges children or grandchildren or they are doing something that reminds the judge of a child they have loved you will be in like Flint. As stated above--by all means enter the photograph if you feel comfortable with any entry fee requested. You may just tickle some judges "Oh-how-cute-bone."

sfcole
My eye is drawn to the unfortunate fuzzy blob that the child's head is resting on. And the lighting is hard and unprofessional-looking (just looks like a hot-shoe flash was used). Sorry, doesn't do it for me.
ronny_zou
i say enter it unless it costs quite a bit of money to enter. It's a mediocre photo to me. But good luck!
