Are there any magazines left that cover film cameras?

Recommended Posts

While not purely film-based, there are two magazines I read which provide some film/film camera coverage.
Black + White Photography (U.K.)
I can't think of any but there are darkroom magazines so..they deal with film! The choice of new film cameras is severly limited so there's not much of a market. That said there are still lots of people using film and film cameras, and they di pop up as features and not "oddball" look here's a guy still using film, but real professionals that either can't or don't want to change. Just liek many of us, they're plenty of folks riding the fence ot using both or AC/DC whatever. I wouldn't condemn it.

Just the market has narrowed and there's just not a base to support it! I think in another 20 years, film may....many...maybe so obsolete and or expensive that there will be specialty magazines that cater to this "elite" group of users!

Not English material but in Japan there are a ton of magazines, some for film only and some with good film coverage. There's one I get regularly called Camera Magazine and it is pure film. It introduces film cameras, shows how they work and gives interviews of people using film cameras. There's also a good bunch of pictures which are nice to browse through. The interesting thing is that in every issue they have a section in the back which lists all the current cameras and film in production and there is a surprising amount!
The last issue had a whole chunk on the new(ish) Zeiss Ikon RF camera. It had all these diagrams of the various rangefinder optical systems used in the various Leicas and the Bessas etc. Its a good read.

Kozma, I run into people ALL the time that want to learn how to shoot film (I know, it makes me feel old). Most are younger kids who like retro, or guys (and some gals) my age, who missed out on the frenzy of the 70s and 80s. Others are more interested in darkroom work. Look at the rise of the Holga and toy camera revolution. It stuns me to see kids in my little burb who carry around Holga and Diana cameras.

I am with Kozma at this point. I don't need magazines that cover film cameras simply because there is no useful information about film cameras that can't be gathered better in the internet, for example on this page. Magazines always had the disadvantage, that they are financed by adds and therefore are not free in their evaluation of equipment.
On the other hand I love to see pictures in magazines and prefer that to web presentation. But this has nothing to do with film or digital.

Do what I do. Whenever I stop at the local recycle/reuse center and see a beginner's book on photography (usually 50 cents), I buy it, and save it to give away to some young person that wants to learn about shooting with film cameras. It always amazes me that many young folks forget that books are independent of any other resource to be able to read them, and thus are perfect for taking with one anywhere...
As stated above, you can't expect any current magazine to focus entirely on film cameras. I would much rather read a magazine like Lenswork for the inspiration, anyway.

While I agree that a magazine concentrating on film gear would be great, there is not enough new gear being made to fill very many issues (even counting Lomos and Holgas). I do have extensive back issues (from my collection and my late fathers) that go back as early as 1952. I enjoy reading them from time to time. Like others, I look for new film camera info on the internet.
