Hi, Thanks all the Photo.net members,as this platform had made me confident to decide over my requirement for an up gradation to my photography equipment. THANKS A TON.
I'm about to buy my first full frame (5D MKII) after suing D-70 for more than four yrs. The brand is offering me 24-105 f/4 IS with the body. For a start is this lenses a good build or I should look for some better lenses other than this.
Since I'm in Fashion as well Industrial Photography business I would be requiring high power lenses including wide angel as well tele lenses.'
Please suggest.

00X2UC-267547584.thumb.jpg.45b057f93a723f834f4bdea3ece7324c.jpg

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is an excellent lens, but you may find the barrel distortion at the wide end to be a bit much. If you are comfortable with correcting it in software and you don't mind f/4 as the fastest available aperture, then it's a good choice. I know a number of pro photographers who seem to have this lens on their cameras every time I see them.

If you really want "high power lenses including wide angle" then you might want to consider instead the trio of Canon EF f/2.8L zooms: 16-35mm II, 24-70mm, and 70-200mm IS. Total cost for these three runs to over $4000 but they are all excellent. If you need better than that, then you'll have to go for high-quality prime lenses.

The lens has a very good build which is unusual for a kit lens (Yes the 24-105 is Canons standard kit lens). Yes it does have some barrel distortion and some vignetting at around 24mm. The 24-70 is also very good but its F2.8 aperture makes it a little heavy and it doesn't have IS (a very useful featurein my opinion). Also you might not find the focal length range as usefull as the 24-105. Any other comparable lenses in canons line up are either telephoto lenses or wide angle lenses which might not be as useful for you.

You might want to check out both at a store.

Only for rather expensive cameras. They don't give you an EF 24-105mm f/4L with a Rebel, a 50D, or even a 7D, but they're not going to package some plastic crap lens with a $2500 camera body. The EF 24-105mm f/4L is an L lens and well deserving of that designation. It's not my favorite lens because I rarely use zooms, but as I said before, I know pros who use it all the time.

Industrial: Canon EF 17-40mm f/2.8L USM

Not "industrial", but "nonexistent". I assume your intention is to suggest the EF 17-40mm f/4L (not f/2.8) as an alternative to the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L. It's a good suggestion for people who tend toward the wider end and don't need f/2.8, but for people who need 70mm more often than 17mm, the 24-70mm may be preferable.

I use my 17-40 f/4L extensively for fashion shoots. I interchange with the 24-105L when necessary. The 50 f/1.8 is also another staple lens in my 'arsenal.' What exactly do you mean by industrial photography? I would assume wide angle images and hence would second the 17-40L suggestion. And definitely get your 5D2 with the 24-105L; it's good value for money as a kit and an excellent lens.

It's an old chestnut, but I prefer the 24-70mm f2.8L over the 24-105 f4L IS. What it lacks in IS, the extra 35mm of reach and weight/size, it gains in MUCH less vignetting wide open at 24mm, less distortion and a stop more light gathering capability (plus 1 stop more ability for shallow depth of field obviously). It's always a compromise and everyone has different priorities.

I think I commented on this already, but I would go with the 24-70 F2.8L (Fashion) over the 24-105. When shooting fasion or people in general I like the faster shutter speed because people move, F4 and IS will not help you shoot a runway fashion show but F2.8 will make all the difference in the world espeacially when not using flash. I would also consider the17-40 F4L (industrial) in it is great for RealEstate Interior or exterior photos because of its very low distortion and excellent wide angle performance. Pewrsonally, I don't feel the 24-105 deserves the L status as no L-series should be excellent at either extremes and the 24-105 is not excellent wide open at 25MM. Mattrer of fact it is outright bad at 24 with both vignetting and horizontial distortion. I prefer my Tamron 28-75 F2.8 over that lens.

If you look at canon they make 2 series of L lenses, one at f2.8 and one at f4. The f4 series is designed to be cheaper often half the price or so of the f2.8 version and take smaller filters but are slower and sometimes slightly lesser in quality. The f2.8 series is faster slightly better and costs you more than you want it to.
f4
17-40 24-105 70-200
f2.8
16-35 (hopefully 14-24 soon) 24-70 70-200
