Where to get good websites for photography?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering where you got your website? Did you hire a designer? Is there a place to 'do it yourself' that you use and like? I currently use Zenfolio, but after signing up with it, I am realizing there are not enough options for me to successfully organize my business (no custom HTML allowed). I'm not completely internet savvy and can't create my own website from the ground up, but I would like to have the freedom of editing html and adding banner links from awards I've received.

Thanks for any help.

I built my own site and it sure looks it! ;-) Functionality of the photo galleries is the only thing that matters to me though.

Most bigger web hosting companies have some sort of site builder tools. I know Jeff likes FatCow so I'd check them out. Maybe also have a look at 1&1, GoDaddy and a few others. Personally I intensely dislike GoDaddy but that has nothing to do with their site building tools so for all I know they might be excellent as far as that aspect goes.

I'm using a local host (to actually talk to a face for problems) and do my own design and coding (and like Mikael, it shows), but I've always liked the flexibility and latitude with my own work, besides learning. I also use GoLive in html mode (have coded since 1994, and yes long before those nice wysiwyg editors). But that said, you can find someone to code it up and teach you how to update it, and blocks of code for tasks are available from other Websites (view source) and tool/code Websites (offer kits or examples), along with packages which sell it. You can also use some of the many free or cheap wysiwyg editors.

The thing to watch is when you get your domain name, make sure you're actually buying it and not leasing it. Some offer cheap domain names so long as you use them as a host, but they own the name and retain the rights should you decide to move the Website. If not that they often retain the registry rights so you're still paying them to keep the registry, especially when it's up for renewal. Both are often negotiable later. Check the terms for domain names.

What Mikael said I built my own site and it sure looks it! ;-)
What Scot said I've always liked the flexibility and latitude with my own work
the big criticism of my site is that it looks dated.
But it works on every Browser (30+) and OS's (20+) known to man.
Fast and easy to navigate with various views.
Very update and expandable I just added Italy in less than a hour.

three choices are:
Write you own. Unless you spend a LOT of time learning HTML it's going to look amateurish.
Spend a LOT of money and have a web designer write on for you.
Use a template which usually end-up looking like bpase or flicker.

If you or anyone else likes my format send me an e-mail.

I built my site with jAlbum. It's not too hard to do a multi-level site with some of the newer skins, the older versions just created a gallery. I host at FatCow, I pay $3.88/month for unlimited storage and emails, if you look around the web, you can find similar pricing, although it's only a buck a month higher at the site.

I use Photoshelter. Instant galleries, watermarking, full search, customizable design templates, instant thumbnail and large pic scaling, flash slideshows, pricing profiles, automatic licensing sales with scalable Fotoquote pricing, print fulfillment with three different print providers, lightboxes, customer databases, etc. etc. A very robust service. If you're not satisfied with Zen Folio, PS is worth looking at. Custom html, CSS, javascript, etc.

I have been searching the DIY websites and found some great ones...a little pricey in my opinion, but they are pretty chic! www.photobiz.net and www.clickbooq.com charge some one time fees but then are reasonable monthly after that. If you wanted a pretty plain website at a really low cost, www.3dcart.com is a good one as well. Hope this helps--I'm going to be putting together a website soon myself! -Lindsay

Some links:
www.photobiz.com, www.viperdezigns.com, www.heritagewebdesign.com, www.godaddy.com, www.networksolutions.com
When photographers come to me needing a website (I'm the programmer for ViperDezigns), the above companies is usually what is mentioned. Through the conversations with my clients, they base it simply on what they need.
Example: Create your own? Template website? Flash site? Custom? Spend 99$? 700$? 5000$?
Honestly, I do not suggest creating your own unless you have good web graphic knowledge along with basic - intermediate knowledge of HTML. As stated above, having a "home made website" can really end up being more of a burden than helpful. All in all, it is what you need. After that, find a company that fits your specific needs.
The great thing about a website, nothing is ever written in stone. You can always change, adapt, redo, ect.
Kindest Regards,

Steven P.

I use Zenfolio. They provide a great deal of customisation just with a few clicks, no programming language knowledge is necessary. The site is very reliable and their support services are quick and helpful. Useful updates are periodically released based on customers needs and requirements.

I am not only NOT a programmer or web builder in any sense of the imagination but I really know very little about computers in general. I did build my own, though, using what I discovered to be about the crappiest program for web-building in the universe. As such, I would suggest hiring it out. It's a total nightmare if you don't know what you are doing.

Photographers, like designers, have a need to display an attractive portfolio for their websites visitors, and many photographers have excellent portfolio sites. In this post I’d like to take a look at 25 of the best. This collection is based on the quality of the portfolio site itself, not necessarily the work being displayed inside the portfolio.
