New to site, otherwise old

Recommended Posts

Hello to all,

I am new to photo.net but otherwise just old ;) I have loved photography for at least the last 30 years and in my early years actually dreamed/ planned to be a professional photographer. After several careers and several cameras, I am still an amateur.
I began taking pictures back in the late70's with my dad's canon 35mm SLR. When I joined the Navy, I bought 2 Nikon F3HP's with visions of traveling the world as a photojournalist. After a healthy dose of reality got to me, I quickly adapted to the illustrious role of amateur that I aspire to to this day.
When digital photography began to come of age, I put aside my beloved F3's, in favor of various (affordable) digital compacts. I only recently rejoined the ranks of SLR photographers, when my lovely wife gave in to my whining and bought me a Nikon d5000 DSLR.
I know that the pro's will scoff at the d5000. Coming from the F3, however, I don't really miss the top-panel LCD or the magic CLS remote flash sync (though in hindsight the off-camera wireless flash sync would be divine).
I love photography, though I hampered by a total ineptitude with regard to digital photo processing, nay an almost irrational fear of Photoshop and it's ilk. I grew up in the era of "get it right the first time" where, if you didn't have your own darkroom (which I didn't) you had to keep what you shot.
I don't have a website to sell or a business to pimp, I am here because I love the art (even if I am not very good at it) and I hope that I can lurk here and glean some occasional bits of knowledge that might sink into my brain.

Welcome Eric!
It's refreshing to hear of someone who should I say . . . "Old school," and from the "get it right the first time" era.
Reading your introduction is almost like reading my own experiences and ideas about photography!
I hope you will find Photo.net as rewarding as I have over the years. This site is loaded with varied, knowledgeable and talented people.
Look forward to seeing more of your work show up in your Gallery here on PN!
Sincerely,

your wife isn't alone. I'm sure there are many similar stories around this place! I know my wife can tell a few about husbands whining for new toys.

Welcome to PN!
