roger_webster
Can anyone tell me what format the later Sony Mavica cameras (eg the 5Mp models) used? I always thought that the relatively high pic quality on ostensibly low res was due to medium format capture but I can't find any reference to format other than CD, floppy etc - I want to know about the image format - can anyone help?
starvy
5 MP is not low resolution if the pictures are not to be blown up. Interpolation was also big in the early days of digital.
cabbiinc
Sony Mavica and high pic quality probably don't get said together in the same sentence all that often, for that matter to consider it a medium format camera probably doesn't happen all that often either.

The image format is Jpeg. But I think what you're really asking is if it's an ok camera, which in my opinion it is not. It could have 15mp and that wouldn't make it any better of a camera. In other words you'd probably get better images from a one time use film camera with expired film.

Then again, you could consider them the next Lomo fad about to happen.
gregory_king1
"Medium format capture"? Huh?

It's a 5mm x 7mm sensor. The 6mp DSLR's had 18mm x 24mm sensors, or pixels that were about 10x as big at 9 micron.
Nothing medium format about them that I can think of.

jdrose
The floppy disc is very large, the sensor very tiny. The camera is nothing close to medium format.

http://www.photo.net/nature-photography-forum/00FmEu

m_dawg
The sensor should be approximately 7mmx5mm on the Sony camera. Medium format film ranges from 44mmx56mm to 56mmx170mm in terms of film size.

So no, the Sony does not have a medium format sensor or anything even close. If it takes great images, though, tech specs don't matter at all. One of the best-regarded landscape photographers just switched from large format to point and shoot digital, so as long as you like it, it's good.
tim_bosley1
Hey! I still have some floppies laying around. It was an early Sony digicam if I recall and has to be closing in on 10 yrs ago.
It would now make a good camera for getting your child interested in digital photography - if you had a PC with floppy access.
