Where are you from? And fave local spot.

Recommended Posts

Just curious to see where everyone is from. Post where you live and your favorite local spot (within a few hours drive) to take photos. Maybe this can build up a little database of photograpic destinations that can be referenced when traveling.

I'm from Louisville, Kentucky and Red River Gorge is my favorite local spot (45 minutes east of Lexington, KY). There are lots of natural arches and rock formations. A beautiful area that is hard to believe is in Kentucky. Fall is my favorite time of year b/c of the fall colors and great weather.

I'm currently living near Leavenworth Kansas about 30 minutes from downtown Kansas City, MO.
We have an extremely large (20,000+ acre) wildlife area within an hour south of KC. It's mostly a Waterfowl refuge with all sorts of wildlife subjects. Best in the Fall and Winter. I lived in the area for 20+ years so I'm very familiar with the more remote and less traveled parts of the refuge.

Otherwise, there is much to photograph in and around the Kansas City area.
I'm starting to work on more documentary type photography. Leavenworth and Kansas has some great historical areas and it needs documented to pass on to future generations before it's gone.

I live in the historic Hampton Roads area of Virginia, on the Chesapeake Bay. My favorite place to photograph is Colonial Williamsburg. I love photographing the interpretors and artisans there. They are a small, close-knit community and a living anachronism:

I live in Gloucestershire, England. Within a few hours drive I've got most of Great Britain! Within an hour or so's drive I have the Cotswolds, the Wiltshire Downs, Stonehenge, Avebury stone circle and the Brecon Beacons in South Wales. Within twenty minutes drive I have the Golden Valley where the River Boyd flows past the remains of the old ochre works, plus the Frome valley.

00WgKb-252283584.jpg.c4f21beebffef3b178ac176519b0bffa.jpg

I live in the heart of Germany, close to several borders: Luxemburg is 5 miles out, Belgium and France 50 miles, and the Netherlands and Switzerland 250 miles. I think you'd go the same distance if you'd want to go to Czechia. Before our time, the Romans have lived here and left their mark - there's quite some nice places to visit. Half of my city is built on their foundations.

The region where I live - on the banks of the Mosel (where all that good wine comes from!) has rolling hills and a soft feeling, a bit like Tuscany one one side of the river, and slightly alpine with lots of fir trees and rocks on the other. Harsh and cold in the winter, it's balmy and warm throughout the summer. I love standing somewhere on heights overlooking these hills, preferably with summer fields around me.

Meanwhile, the fields have turned red from poppies.

I live in Crossville, TN (about 70 miles west of Knoxville). It's hard to pick a single favorite spot because there are so many of them. Every little back road seems to contain a photographic treasure or two. But, to name a few: Fall Creek Falls State Park, Cumberland Mountain, Walden Ridge, Tennessee River Valley and, of course, the Great Smoky Mountains and the Southern Appalachians down into Georgia...

Steve - I lived in New York for a little while, is that the Bear Mountain bridge? I had to cross that almost every day.

Well, if you want to know where I'm from, I was born in New Orleans and one of my fav spots there is the Metarie Cemetary. (sorry, no pics available on this computer)

As for where I live, I'm in the North Georgia Mountains, about an hour drive from Atlanta. This pic is just up the road from my house, and it's always a favorite during fall.

I'm from the Netherlands... One of my favourite spots was a tiny nature area called Hatertse Vennen, very close to the city of Nijmegen:

Nowadays living in Siracusa, Sicily, where my favourite spot is definitely Ortigia, a small island with the historic city centre of this very very old city.

Can recommend both places :-)

I am from the city of San Francisco and feel I am truely blessed with what is in a 50 mile radius. The list of wonderful places is unending.. the Sonoma coast, the Marin coast, the San Mateo and Santa Cruz coasts.. then all the National, State and County parks - Point Reyes, Pescadero Creek, Sunol, Mt. Diablo, Sweeny Ridge, San Pedro Valley.. then all the beautiful vistas and wacky goings-on in San Francisco itself. Then Sears Point Raceway for beautiful cars, Palo Alto Baylands for beautiful birds.. If you don't hate me, you should. ;)

00WgX6-252449584.jpg.02a2480f0e3d8b95bd3f4fcf881751b9.jpg
