justin_campbell
Hi, I was wondering if any one had heard of Square Perfect before. They have some inexpensive studio kits available on ebay. I know most of you will suggest Alien Bees but I'm on a tight budget...one kid already and another on the way. I came across this while browsing ebay for some used gear...thoughts?
http://bit.ly/9ti5tL

Thanks!

jerry s
My comments are based purely on the specifications provided, and not experience with this particular set. I agree that it seems a bit overpriced based on the specs. Nice that it includes a radio trigger, but I have no well idea how well it works. Additionally, though it includes soft boxes, a barn door, and honeycomb filter, there's no mention of compatability with other modifiers. My biggest concern is the flash tube rating - only 8,000 flashes. Is the tube user replaceable, or does the entire unit need to be sent back to the manufacturer (and at what cost?).
Ian's recommendations for FlashPoint or interfit lights are good. ProMaster and others may have kits that fit your budget as well. Of course, since you begged for an AlienBees recommendation, I'll include that as well:) I know you want to start with a fully capable studio kit, but you may want to consider just purchasing one or two monolights for now, along with a couple of basic modifiers, and grow your system over time. In the long run, you'll save both money and frustration. If the budget is extremely tight, look at a single monolight with an umbrella or basic soft box, and use some foamcore as a reflector. You can even use a white sheet as a diffuser if you have to!
