50d vs 7d?

Although it's all been said above here a summary (biased of course).

Your XSi is a great camera with regards to image quality. At lower ISO's you won't see any difference between it, the 50D and the 7D.

A hot-shoe radio transmitter is cheap and beats a cable 90% of the time in terms of practicality.

The body of a 50D is hugely better than that of a XSi. Both in terms of build quility ans in terms of easy handling. The body of a 7D is only a little better than that of a 50D.

The 50D and the 7D both are more difficult to master than the XSi but the endresults can be slightly better. Post processing is a little harder and must be "relearned" when buying a new body. (I must walk carefully not to contradict my first bullit.)

The 7D has nicer AF, AE and has video if you compare it to the 50D.

My advice would be to keep on using your XSi until you are sure you need something that one of the other camera's provide. Until that time I'd invest in good glass.

(Think nice primes like the Sigma 30/1.4, Canon or Sigma 50/1.4 or Canon 85/1.8 or even 100/2.8L IS macro. Or a more expensive high quality zoom like EF-s 17-55/2.8 or a 70-200 variant.)

On professional use: even rebels are used by professionals and the 50D is used a lot for action/bird photography. (But the 7D is the better body if money isn't an issue.)

Jennifer - if you look at this site, you will see what is possible on a range of cameras, starting with the with a XT (the first rebel series, with 8MP) and an L lens.

I have looked at that site several times when 'upgrade fever' takes its toll.

I think you should plan your kit (body and lenses) and then start buying the the lenses first - you may find you can delay getting the 50D until the 7D falling price (or the 50D becomes cheaper still).
I don't know about US lens prices, so take the following with a pinch of salt: You say you are not sure about the lenses to get - what do you have at the moment? If it is the 50D plus one lens, then I would think the 24-105 f4L. For a two lens set-up, it could be the 70-200 f4L (IS ifyou can afford it with either the 24-105 or the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (probably non-IS, as it is less important at most of those shorter focal lengths). And don't forget the 50mm f1.8, excellent for the low price.

Didn't mean to open Pandoras Box! Just stating it was an opnion of mine which was supported by a 5dmkii owner who is also going to the 7d. If a full frame body is your need, by all means consider the 5dmmii!
The 7d has more control oprions, 12,800 iSO and great AF setting/functions. If I were a proclaimed Professional and needed a full frame, I surely would have considered the 5dmkii more seriously.
In my next upgrade, the 5dmkii will probably be skipped alltogether and move to the1d, 1ds. Knowing what the xsi and the 7d can do, the next upgrade may only pertain to glass! I allready have the L series is usm f2.8 and the f4. Step up to the 100-400 and/or the 400mm is usm.
The website link above that leads to Juzza Photo supports the basic fact that the Camera is only a support tool for a Photographer and their Glass!

@Ron: Just bear in mind that 12,800 ISO is worthless if it doesn't create a usable picture. And the 7D does not create a usable picture at 12,800. Heck, for my needs it doesn't really produce a usable picture at 1,600. But from your lens choices I'd say you probably shoot sports or wildlife, in which case you're absolutely right, the 7D is better. I also agree that the 7D has a better AF system which would also help in those applications. Sounds like you definitely made the right choice, Ron. Happy shooting.

Mr. Noceti!
Thank You for your response! Yes I agree 100% in regards to the ISO Issue. 12,800 ISO does You no good when Quality is lost. You are right in the usage of My 7d, I do a lot of Outdoor and Sports shooting. I am Pleased with the 7d for the all the shooting I have done with it so far. I do use this System with my 70-200 f2.8 IS USM glass to take indoor Portrait pics of My Family, and everyone, including Myself, are very impressed with the results.
I NEVER EVER use an ISO exceeding 800. There is a reason for 12,800 ISO but I haven't discovered it yet! I like to experiment! Maybe I will get hit in the head by lightning and the reason "may" pop in!
I do use PSE 7 in Processing my RAW pics, or Canon DPP, but for very minute adjustments. I am amazed sometimes at the Quality of pics through post processing, but I am little dissapointed in the fact that many have fallen to this instead of the Quality put Into the Shot. Yea Technology!
Anyway! I just have to say that the 7d will fit many needs for a long time and may send Canon in a new direction of designing Systems that meet, or maybe exceed consummer needs instead of Nickle and Dimeing us to Death with new Models.
Speaking of New Models, or maybe Upgrading as some would say! If I outgrow this 7d sooner than I think I will, I most likely will step-up to the 1d Series, maybe even the "Flagship"! What the "heck", If You're going to be good, Might as well be Really Good!
Once again Thank You for Your Comment and have a Great time! I sincerely hope that discussions here, have helped Jennifer in her decision to Purchase. It can be very hard and I wish her the best of Luck in her choice and hope that whatever her choice is, that she is content in her decision.
Thanks My Friend.

FYI, www.adorama.com has refurbished 7D's for around the price of new 50Ds. I just picked one up, other than the "refurbished" sticker on it you would never know it wasn't new. Came in a sealed Canon Box (refurbished by Canon) with all the software and accessories. I picked up two refurbished lenses as well, same deal. I've been very happy with it so far. Of course you can probably find refurbished 50Ds for even less.....
