ryan_chase
it would want to be one hell of a hair cut :)
in such a competitive market, and for someone looking to further himself into the field of photography, im not going to question why my clients approached me.
taking into account my lack of experience i consider it an honour.
My main focus now isnt why i was chosen, but instead how i will prepare for the events.
like previously stated i do intend to attend weddings prior to the event as an assistant.
This is all just part of the journey for me.thats why i do appreciate feedback, and i do understand peoples pessimism, but this is a learning curve for me. like it is for any photographer starting out.
since these original photos i posted ive taken a few more photos, including graduation ones. please feel free these by clicking on the link below.
by all means please offer any critisim, areas of concern, and compliments if any.cheers
http://www.redbubble.com/people/chase450d
Sunset-Lounge
you've heard it before. practice practice practice. practice different equipment. practice different situations. get to know your equipment better than you know your best friends. if you're going to use models, get something out of them. more than just a bored stare. bored stares are distracting.
also - when you're presenting yourself to clients, dont show anything that you're not very proud of or that you would not want to do again. Talented is good. Punctual, polite and talented is even better. good luck. and practice.
michael_novo
Nice shots. Only one that doesn't work for me is the high contrast one. If there was more color contrast then perhaps it might, otherwise the big white blown out area behind her sort of leaves the eye a bit lost. I'm not at all against blowing highlights, just not sure it fits specifically in that shot. Instead all of the available detail and objects in the shot I might want to capture and saturate a bit more. But that's just my take.
ryan_chase
michael, thanks for the feedback..
the more i look at the high contrast image the more i dislike it haha :)
i tried giving the photo a bit more attitude, and the original image was severely over exposed and at the time the photo was uploaded i didnt have photoshop :)
i know not to go for the high contrast look from now on.
tom, thanks also.
i couldnt agree with you more in terms of practice and more practice. its ultimately the best way to learn from your mistakes by far. The photos posted lack facial expression and emotion because the girl was self conscious about her braces and requested them not be photographed :)
greg_peterson3
Shooting a good picture of an attractive, graceful young woman is easy.

Let's see how you do with a homely, clumsy old man. (I'd volunteer as a test subject, but I'm probably too far away.)
chuckunderhill
Jeff and Lacey both have good points, especially Jeff's about the wedding you plan to shoot. He IS wrong about getting weddings booked thou. I went to a wedding of a couple of friends a few years back and took some decent, nice shots that their pro didn't get. Next thing I knew I had friends of friends calling me up and asking for price quotes on shooting their wedding. Which I did of course and it was the worst choice I ever made. I was (and still am not) no way good enough, nor skilled enough to justify being paid for my services as a "professional" photographer.
So yes, you can book weddings and other events as a beginner, and yes you might even get some good shots, the question that really comes to my mind, is should you? When you look at the portraits and the wedding shots posted here by the truly skilled photographers, do you feel that you can do as well? Seriously.
I like a number of your shots, not #3, but the rest are fine. I would say that if you can take that good a shot after 5 weeks, then you are going to be come very good very fast as long as you pursue learning, learning, learning. We all started somewhere and it looks like you are off to a good start, but it IS just the start, don't forget.
