Love, Hate and Want

Recommended Posts

Not Cams, not that special someone(s) but cities!...specifically, cities for great street photography. Name three cities or localities you have been to that you absolutely loved, three you hated (or didn't meet your expectations, photographically speaking) and finally, three that you want to go. Only rule is you can not pick a city/place in your home country.

I'll start: Home = US
in random order:

LOVE:

1. Bangkok
2. Mexico City
3. Siem Reap / Hanoi (they are small enough)

HATE:

1. Toronto
2. Seoul
3. Jakarta

WANT:

1. Karachi
2. Tehran
3. Istanbul
4. Havana
5. Sao Paulo

Home, I now live in Germany but I'm Italian, so which one is my home country?
Love: Paris, above any other. Buenos Aires. London. Delhi. If I could pick a place in Italy Rome would be very high in the list.
Hate: Santa Fe. Stuttgart. Rio de Janeiro
Want to go: New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Mexico City, Sidney.

Could I go beyond 3? If not, cut my lists at the third one ;-)

I've really only done most of my shooting in LA. I did shoot a little in San Diego and one afternoon in San Francisco. I'd like to shoot in New York city but a relative I have who lives there never replied to my inquiry about staying with her for a week. NY is too expensive for me to stay any longer then a couple days. That being the case I'll probably do some more extensive shooting in San Francisco later this year. Tokyo is another city I'd love to stay awhile in for some shooting but like NY, it's just too expensive for me to stay any longer then a couple of days. A couple days in either city is probably how long it would probably take me to get over my jet lag and get settled and get a feel for the city.

I have not travelled much since I have gotten interested in street photography, but am lucky to live near New Orleans. For those of you have New Orleans on your list of wants, I highly recommend this city. For those of you who don't have New orleans on your list of wants, I highly recommend this city. Lots of interesting characters!

Luca Sbordone@ Forget the rules. I just didn't want it to be US centric...I knew I was going to get NYC and SF from most every American photog. I wanted more variety, more of a world list.

Marc Todd @ I hear you guy. NYC and Tokyo certainly are pricey but there are many other places good for street photography. Besides, there are ways if you want it bad enough...have a look at www.couchsurfing.org if you haven't.

Linda McLellan@ Hope you get to travel and shoot.

Craig Cooper @ I agree. Once you spent any significant time in Asia, most western cities will be pretty boring.

Live: In beautiful Quebec City region (surprised nobody has mentioned it - great for street shooting and architecture)
Like
Unknown and intriguing places; also Portugese cities and towns; Honfleur, Troye, Perpignan, Collioure, Marseilles, Paris, Medieval French cities, villages; Savannah, Georgia; Dutch cities; markets in villages; Edinborough, Chester, Ludlow;
Dislike
Many faceless modern cities in North America and their cookie-cutter suburbs (except people, who are often quite interesting);
Shopping centres, malls, anywhere;
Wish
Any intriguing and different city; different cultures; cities of people with dignity and tradition;
Enhanced subjective creative approach in my photography, enhanced fantasy of vision and new ways of photographing people and places;
The ability to stretch the limits of photography and going beyond "déja vu"

P.S., in list of likes, saw someone mentioned Isle-sur-la-Sorgue in Provence. Great place, great market. In the same area, Cordes, Roussilion, Le Thor and St-Remy are all good steet shooting destinations in southern France.
