frank_gross Posted March 18, 2010 Share Posted March 18, 2010
All of a sudden while I was photographng this morning my 5D camera 'quit'.
The f-stops do not display and I cannot therefore change the aperture.
I can see and change the shutter speeds.
If I press the shutter anyway, then the display shows Err 01.
Using alcohol pads I cleaned the gold contact pins in the camera body and also the gold contacts on the lenses. The same problem happens with all my lenses. So it's more likely to be a camera body problem.
Can anyone help me fix this ?
Thank you,
Frank
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

mike_godwin1 Posted March 18, 2010 Share Posted March 18, 2010
I found this little helps on a few other sites:

============================================
Sounds like you need to replace the date/time battery...
See page 41 of your 5D manual
============================================
You probably need to replace the clock battery. It is a lithium button battery. It is in a tray on the bottom corner of the Camera below the usb connection. You will need a small Phillips screwdriver.
============================================

Hope this helps.

Mike
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
alan_bryant1 Posted March 18, 2010 Share Posted March 18, 2010
Also try recharging the main battery, or using a different one if you have one. Weak or dying batteries can cause a variety of weird problems. Remove the battery grip if you're using one.

If the battery doesn't seem to be the problem, I'd start working through the LensRentals Error 99 checklist,

https://www.lensrentals.com/news/2008.12.31/canon-err99
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
frank_gross Posted March 18, 2010 Author Share Posted March 18, 2010
I just replaced the button battery with a new one. I also replaced the main battery with a recharged one. Cleaned the electrical contacts with an alcohol swab. I tried removing both batteries and the CF card and letting the camera sit for a while in the on position and then replacing them all. But still the problem persists with any/all lenses. No autofocus and no f-stops.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
alan_bryant1 Posted March 18, 2010 Share Posted March 18, 2010
Sounds like you've pretty much isolated it to the camera body. Probably needs a trip back to Canon.

You might see if you can trigger the shutter with no lens attached; however even if you can, I don't suppose that will do you much good.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

graskett Posted March 19, 2010 Share Posted March 19, 2010
I had the same thing happen to my 40D. (Err 01). You may want to contact Canon tech support first but ultimately you'll likely be sending it to them. The repair costs for mine was $175 because my warrenty had just expired.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
roland_gooday Posted August 14, 2010 Share Posted August 14, 2010
Hi,

I just bought a used 5d off a well know internet auction site. It arrived, was fantastic for about 100 shots then I received err 1. Changed lens, same error. Changed to another lens same error. Unfortunately, this happened at my father in law's 70th birthday party. Did you resolve your problem, if so what was it? I was planning to change my button battery first...in the end I had to use the old trick of part un-screwing the lens on the mount and shooting everything at a fully open aperture in full day light - often at 1/8000 shutter speed.

Cheers

Roland
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
