matt_sepeta
I am making a home made beauty dish for my sb-28 and have a question.

I bought the tupperware and everything I need, but when looking for the mirror, I could not find the advised convex "blind spot" car side mirror add on thingy.

I COULD find a 10X magnification concave mirror though, so I bought it.

Would this work in lieu of the convex mirror?

Could it give me a boost in light output?

JAPster
Concave is the opposite of convex, so any optical device that specifies one will probably *not* function as designed if you use the other. Wherever you buy this, make sure you get the store's promise to refund your money if you are not satisfied.
james_porter4
Hello Matt,
I did the DIY beauty dish setup and I picked up the mirror from my auto parts store. I was able to locate several different sizes (convex) that is, with no issue.
By the way, it does give the finished product a well finished look.
Love to see what you do with it...
sheldonnalos
I used a convex mirror for my DIY beauty dish for use with speedlights. Like James, I got mine at the auto parts store. However, my Elinchrom beauty dish uses a concave reflector. I would say that it doesn't really matter that much either way. I'd personally go with convex though, seems to make more sense.
mrstubbs
This one has the upper cover of a street light, found at the tip. Add a generic ring, and center peice(old clock face) to bounce the light back into the dish, using some threaded rod. It works a treat. I have a second one nearly ready on the bench. I'm makind a couple of coloured center peices so I can add warmth or cool to center of the illumination.

michael.gregory
What the concave mirror will do is focus ll so the light that hits it in to a tight beam directed straight back and your flash head instead of out towards the back of the bowl. The strobe will have a concave reflector at its back that will focus the light into a tight beam to shoot back out to the concave mirror which will focus the light in to a tight beam directed back at the strobe which has a concave reflector which....
ianivey
I think what Michael is trying to say is: go ahead and use the concave mirror, but understand that, if you do so, time will sto
