What is a good microphone/audio recorder to use at the same time as shooting Nikon D5000 HD video?

As we all know, the Nikon D5000 (and most other DSLRs in its range) can only take mono audio during video recording, and it's very poor quality at that. Unfortunately as well, there is no input for an external microphone. Here is my question: what is a good quality (external) stereo audio recorder that I can use to record sounds while I'm shooting video, and then import them into my computer and sync them together as an external audio track with a video editing program, so that way I can take full advantage of the Nikon's excellent HD video quality, and still achieve great audio quality as well?

I'm looking for something no more than $100, if possible. There's really no reason to go all out for the effect I'm trying to achieve. I just want decent stereo sound quality laid on top of the videos shot from the camera.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance to anyone willing to help! :)

Zachary, for a bit more than your budget, the Zoom H2 offers built-in microphones, record to SD card and very high fidelity. I'm not aware of a more attractive option.

At lower cost, you could buy a used MD recorder and put a stereo microphone together using a couple of Panasonic capsules .

Zachary, to do what you are talking about goes back to the old days of movie film where picture and sound were recorded separately and had to be synced up in editing. This is why you always saw the clap board being snapped shut in order to provide a reference point to get sound and picture together. (Actually it's still done this way in Hollywood.) To to this properly you would have to use a slate (clapboard) at the beginning of each and every shot you take, then spend hours lining them up in editing. I've done that in film and it's harder with video. Believe me, you don't want to do that. Also, you can barely buy a decent microphone for $100 let alone a recorder. For what it would cost to buy a decent audio recorder you could buy a camcorder that would do both pictures and sound. And, audio for video isn't typically recorded in stereo in the field -- if you're recording dialogue or interviews, that's just mono with one mike on each person speaking (or back and forth). Stereo is generally done with music and/or sound effects at the editing stage. If you want to shoot video, the much simpler approach is to buy a camcorder that has a microphone input and all the proper controls for shooting video, and not try to shoot video with a DSLR.
