print retouching and enhancement

Recommended Posts

Not sure if I'm in the right place to be asking these questions, but I'll give it a shot. For the last 30 years or so I have worked for a high end portrait photographer retouching and enhancing color and black&white portraits by hand using various methods. Due to "down sizing" I'm looking at doing this sort of work on a freelance basis --- which leads (finally) to my question.... how can I determine what (fee) and how to charge my clients? Is there an "industry" website ? Are there any more of us out there ? I know this is a dying art form , but I still believe there is a market for what I can provide. Would love any feedback.

Lisa, What market (city) are you in? You might try talking with photographers to see what they say. Enough consensus would probably give you a good idea. You might also ask if other retouchers have more work they could feed you, and while you're at it, see if they'll tell you what the going rate is.
