need help choosing inkjet paper for photography book

Recommended Posts

I have recently decided that I am going to make a limited edition of five books to go along with my senior bfa photography exhibition coming up at the end of March. I am seeking some advice on what paper to print on (digital inkjet prints) for the book. Throughout the semester I have done most of my test prints on Inkpress Luster. For the final prints for my show I have decided on using Canson Platine Fibre Rag 310 gsm paper. I am fond of papers that most similarly resemble classic c-print paper. I shoot and print entirely color. Does anyone have any suggestions as to if this paper would work alright for my book, or any suggestions on a similar paper that would be better for a book. I am not printing on both sides of the paper so single sided paper is fine. Thank you.

what size will the book be ... will there be a mix of landscape and portrait mode prints. How will you bind the pages.

I have no experience with Canon printers but a custom book I printed I used Epson Scrapbook paper (do not be fooled by the name it is a high quality matte paper. Unfortunately it seems to be in short supply.

http://www.amazon.com/Matte-Scrapbook-Epson-11-7in-SCR1003/dp/B0000DK660

Ross,
I am curious a Paul is, what binding method are you using? How many photos per book? Unless this is something you feel you need to make, there are several photobook sites that will make very nice books for you at reasonable prices. By the time you throw in the cost of paper, ink, cover material, binding material, and time you probably won't be saving a whole lot and having someone else do it for you will save you a major headache as your BFA show hits the crunch time. I built all my own frames, cut all my mats for mine(illustration), the mats weren't bad but the frames were a time consuming pita. There are a lot of nice papers out there, most of the super glossy are a little fragile and may need to be protective sprayed. I haven't used many of the super glossy so I won't make a bunch of recommendations. Just do a search on best glossy inkjet paper and you should have ample reading. Good luck on your BFA!

Hello Ross,

I agree with Darin.
Is your book a show-only book? You may experience people fiddling with it and leaving sticky fingerprints... that would be a waste of precious paper, ink and time. I'd honestly have books done through a service like blurb.com or similar, who provide nice books at decent cost.
And congrats on your choice of exhib paper - I currently have an exhibition that was printed on Platine Fibre Rag, and I'm just utterly amazed at the richness and depth of colours, and the overall look... ;-)
