This year I'm going to 'step back' and include some context in my macro photographs. For too many years I was obessed with getting super duper up close, and now i'm realising that sometimes that including a little context is better (after some good advice from the helpful folks on PN that is). That realisation really hit home after reading the 'less is only more when more is no good' in the wonderful Philosophy of Photography thread!

To help my local photographer's club I started in Dec 09 grow and inspire other local photographers to be the best that they can and not be afraid to ask questions and try new things.
To be a better photographer by learning more and shooting more...spending LESS time editing and on the computer. To travel more in search of the unique photo that will inspire me and those that see it.
To get back in shape, try new things, officially start my photography business!

As a newer photographer, I feel I've more or less plateaued, but I know there are higher heights to climb to, I just need direction, for the lack of a better word. Therefore, I've searched out formalized training and found a local and respected arts college that offers continuing studies coursework (credit or non-credit) in photography. "The Photographer's Eye..." will be my first course, and the first time in 20 years of formal and continuing education that I will take a college class purely for my own enjoyment. This is the first time I've ever done such a thing and I am really excited for it to begin. 10 weeks, 3 hours on Monday nights. I hope to continue with more classes after this one. To go pro? No. This is for me.

(Josh, if you pick me, pass on the grand prize to a worthy member.)

I hope it is still not too late to post a resolution but here's mine. After 5 long years of first holding a canon 20d in my hands at a friend's wedding, i've longed for a dslr camera. Year after year I tried saving for a camera, after every paycheck. $200 here, $400 there, but every time economic problems put a crack in my already battered savings, and since family should always come first no matter what in this life, I had to give it away.
I've successfully captured landscapes with my 4 year old, brand new looking sony W-5, which on a tripod gave me really good results. But landscapes are things that will always repeat themselves, and you can always go to the same location and photograph your subject the same and have little to no difference. It's those moments in your life that happen once. Those moments that are but a blur in time and will never occur again.
Oh how i wish i would've had a camera the last time my grandmother came to visit before she passed. The last time my family was together, a moment that will never, NEVER repeat itself again in the same way. Or the moment my first child opened his eyes, and having such a slow camera i was forced to use flash, killing the mood of the moment in my shot. But no more, because for xmas my beautifull wife bought me a canon 40d (used but in really, really good perfect shape for $625 US dollars) coupled with a 50 mm f1.8 11, and now I always capture the shot.
So this is my new years resolution, as my first year with a dslr, to finally be able to capture every moment, never miss a shot because of slowness of a p/s, something that is more than possible with a dslr, a tool that has become like my 3rd eye. Happy new years everybody, this is my first post here on photo.net, although i've been a constant every day reader for 2+ years now, and surely this will not be my last...

My resolutions for 2010 :
* to buy a film camera and a digital camera, and play with them to learn to take good photos (if it is possible to learn to do that =)
* to do that analogic lab course that I've been posponing for more than two years because of my lack of free time, and then continue with the digital one
* to scan uncle Carlos pictures first and give him and my cousins a cd with the results, and to scan then all the pictures that I got from mom and the ones I took with my disposable cameras
Doesn't seem too hard to do, but sure it will be fun!

In 2010 I am aspiring to the following photographic goals...
1- To organize my images in a better way. Both my LR catalog and my negatives are a disaster.
2- To carry my camera with me every day. I missed many photo opportunities last year simply because I didn't have it with me.
3- To finish the Northern section of the Florida waterways project I started last year.
4- To break out of my box and shoot different things. I want to do more portraits and get better at artificial lighting.
5- To begin a new self portrait project that I thought of and developed last November and December while I was laying around sick. Sometimes just making time to think can really stir the creative pot.

I want to extend my best wishes to all for a happy and healthy 2010. :)

I resolve to seek new angles and viewpoints, to boldly go where no photographer or Vulcan has gone before, and focus on making myself a unique brand of wedding photographer. I resolve to find clients who appreciate artistry and aren't satisfied with snapshots - and are willing to pay for it. I resolve to make the best use of the tools I have, and to upgrade to the 5D Mark II to improve my tools as well. I resolve to use my photography to bring about world peace, or at least to bring peaceful moments to the world, as well as excitement and thrills.
Next year, I resolve to do more with less, because I have less but clients expect more.

To find more time to get out and take photo's. With 3 young kids it is hard, but I want to find the time to get to use the Sigma 120-400 lens my wife gave me for Christmas.
If I can find the time I'm sure I'll improve my technique and that's what I want to do. Photography on the west coast of BC is great and I want to get more pictures of this great rainforest.

00VSUF-208193584.jpg.346eb1cb603f2d4b48d655d28dd1de64.jpg

At 60yrs of age, I never give up learning. My resolution is to continue learning and I have signed up for two lighting workshops. One being Zack Arias, who is frequently recommended by professionals who's blogs I follow.
My goal is to have a professional say that I'm good enough to volunteer my time photographing children & adults of special needs. Due to the time consuming complexities involved, many professionals steer away for this. Since I'm not in this for a business, I am willing to volunteer.
My greatest reward in photography would be to go to a neo-natal ICU to photograph newborns who face the uphill battle of survival. When I faced my grandson's illness at five weeks, all I could do was photograph. I wanted those memories. I know that parents would want their memories.
This is my resolution and desired accomplishments for 2010. Too much to expect for one year? Some have told me yes. I'll touch base with you in 2011.
