petunia_mango
I bought the camera body off Craigslist Friday and i bought the lens, a Canon EF 28-80mm today. It took about five pictures before displaying "Err 99" Canon says it will cost AT LEAST $180 to fix it, which is what I paid for the camera itself. My local camera store will not trade it in. Canon will, but I will have to pay $400 for a new Rebel.
I'm in a dilemna, as you can tell.
alan_bryant1
A very frustrating error, but probably solvable without a trip to Canon. Unfortunately the list of possible causes is rather long. It could be the lens, the battery, the memory card, or a flash or battery grip if you're using one. In this case I would suspect the lens contacts are dirty, since it sounds like the new element here.

The best reference I know of is a rather long document, but very useful - for the quick list of things to try, skip down to the section titled "The LensRentals Error 99 Process" -

https://www.lensrentals.com/news/2008.12.31/canon-err99
sjsimmons
I used to have that error message on my 10D with certain lenses. A few things helped: (1) turning the camera off, taking the lens off and putting it back on and (2) cleaning the contacts on the lens and camera. You might try finding a friend with Canon SLR and try your lens on his camera and his lens on your camera and see if you can isolate the problem.
Stock-Photos
I have a 10D and when a lens I had on it had a problem, error 99 came up.

Try a different lens first . Borrow one from a friend if if you don't have another.
www.philwinterphotography.
Try different lenses, then try removing both batteries and letting the camera sit for a few minutes and re install the batteries. The main battery is in the hand grip. The other battery is in a compartment in the bottom of the camera. Cleaning the contacts is good suggetion. If none of those things work, it is likely that the shutter has gone, in which case you are looking a repair bill. The shutter in my 10D went, but Canon replaced the shutter under warranty. Good luck.
milbourn
I think this is a catch all error code. I had it on my 10D when I had an out of date and incompatible sigma lens other than at full aperture. I suggest trying another lens and at different appertures.
