A life in photography

Hi, I'm Maury Cohen.
My interest in photography began at age 8 with a Kodak Brownie 127 camera. By age 13 an interest in insects dovetailed with my inheriting a Kodak 35 from my father, and I taught myself to develop and print my own close-ups to save money. My accommodating parents adapted a portion of our basement as a darkroom and I was off and running.
I was fortunate to have a career oriented program in the local High School, and pursued my serious interest through Laney College (Oakland, CA) and earned a BA degree from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Follwing graduation I worked for a short time in Ron Harris's L.A. studio, then for a couple of years at the Jet Propulsion Photo Lab in Pasadena during the Voyager fly-bys of Jupiter and Saturn.
My wife and I moved to Northern California in the 80's where I worked in a local photo lab long enough to renew my confidence in photography. I struck out on my own and operated a commercial studio for 10 years; doing mainly people-oriented work and including weddings and portraits as well as color-critical work for local artists and craftspeople.
In 1994 I had a bit of a mid-life crisis and considered changing careers. my direction was re-established when I found a "dream" job working at Lowepro US just a few miles from home. This work has lasted me into the present; combining my skills in customer-service and my knowledge of photography and photographic gear and processes.
I enjoy both sharing my knowledge and learning on photo.net.
