robin_cuthbertson
Hi all
I'm having a problem with my OM-2n. When I use it in manual mode it seems to work just fine, the shutter speeds seem good (or close anyways), but when I turn it on to auto the shutter sticks open. The meter inside the camera is still reading properly at the right shutter speeds. When the camera is on the "off" setting it does the same thing. The only way I can get the shutter to close again is to turn it to "manual," even resetting the camera doesn't do anything.
Any ideas as to what it might be? Could it be fixable by me or would I have to send it in somewhere? if so any good places to send it in to? It might also be worth mentioning that I just replaced the batteries, but I put in lithium batteries instead of the recommended silver oxide ones, but I seem to remember this being a problem from quite a while ago, when it was using silver oxide batteries.
thanks in advance
nicholas_herndon
It could be the "sticky shutter magnet" problem. John Hermanson will probably be along shortly to confirm. :) But the gist of it is, oil or gunk gets on the shutter magnets, causing trouble with the contacts. Hope that helps.

john_lynch5
Change the Lithium battery for Silver Oxide. The camera will not operate correctly with lithiums.
john_hermanson2
Sounds like you have a defect in the auto circuit. If the magnet was very dirty, it would affect manual speeds the same way, as same electromagnet is used to control manual speeds. Not fixable by you. I'd be happy to work on it. robin_cuthbertson
yeah I tried silver oxides, and it's the same problem. I'm not sure why the different types of batteries would make a difference either. They are the same battery, same voltage, etc. The only difference is what they're made of, so obviously the silver oxides would last longer.
any ideas on how much it would cost? I am a poor student
also where would I send it, etc.?
john_hermanson2
Alkaline and lithium batteries were introduced after the camera had been designed and have different performance characteristics. Right voltage, wrong current. Your problem is not battery related, though silver oxide batteries should still be used. It would be bad form to pitch a repair job here.
