geoff_edwards
Hi
My video recorder has lost playback of sound and won't record programs and the sound now. I think I'll wait till Bluray is cheaper before updating my present recorder. But, an idea occurred to me. Is it possible to record TV programs directly to a modern video-camera? I am thinking of one of these SD card video-cameras. My television is a modern Toshiba, a Regza model C303
Geoff
Hamor Photography
It depends on your camera. My two older Canon MiniDV cameras had analog AV inputs for dumping VHS and VHS-C to MiniDV. Check your manual or, even better, see if your AV out jack is labeled AV in/out.
mc2imaging
Possible? Yes. Good idea? I wouldn't think so.

Many lower end cameras do not offer a video-in option. The higher end cameras that do are typically significantly more expensive than a DVD-R set-top box or DVR.

I have no idea if your TV has the proper outputs or not, you would have to verify what outputs it has (composite, Y/C component (i.e. S-Video) or RGB component, plus stereo line outs for audio) and make sure what you buy is compatible.

And we are just talking standard definition here. If you want to record high definition, you'll probably want a camera with HDMI input, provided your TV has and HDMI output - which is not typical.

Add to that you are putting wear and tear on a camera that you are only using as a VCR. Not an efficient expenditure in my book. I capture video through Leica glass onto three sensors, and I pay dearly for that privelidge. When I dump tapes to hard drive, I NEVER use my high-end cameras as playback decks.
