ray_tatnell
Hi.
I have the Nikon 18-200 G ED DX zoom lens. I am thinking of selling this lens and buying the 70-300 zoom lens.My question is this. Will the additional 100MM focul lentgh bring me much closer that the 18-200.Is it worth the difference.Thanks.
Ray
dpbours
Have a look at the following thread: http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00VUHK
Called "Unhappy with my new 70-300mm" ....

I have to agree, it does not make a big difference, though suffers in sharpness. Better to go for the 80 - 400 VR. Not very light sensitive, but the best there is in this price-range.
Matthew Brennan
Ray,

The 70-300mm VR (I'm assuming you are talking about the current AF-S 70-300mm VR model) will give you exactly another third more reach over your 18-200mm VR.

If you can't imagine how much closer your images will appear try these......

1) Crop a current 200mm frame by 1/3rd and view the difference.

2) Go to a store with your 18-200mm lens and ask to test a 70-300mm VR in store- side by side with your existing 18-200mm lens.

kevin_delson
I hope you have something to fill in the gap from 18-70, unless you find that range useless...most find the 18-70 range VERY useful.

stan_schurman1
In response to Dennis Bours comment, most of what I've read about the Nikon 70-300 VR has been positive. I'm buying one in a couple of weeks and have read up on it. The example he cites was a Sigma lense I believe. Also, Michael Freeman's & Matthew Brennan's comments and examples are correct. You will gain 1/3 over a 200mm lense. Only you can tell if that is adequate for your needs, but it is a considerable jump. In fact you can set your present lense at 100mm and at 200mm and see what the difference is to give you an idea of the % change you will see going from 200mm to 300mm.
tim_knight
I really like my 70-300 vr and would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a very good zoom lens. As was said earlier go to a camera shot and take some pictures using both zooms.
kohanmike
My 70-300 VR is sharp at all focal lengths, 300 is very good.
