500 ELX shutter release mechanism

Norman - On my 500ELX front shutter release button just plugs into one of the two sockets on the lower face of the body. I have the round chrome button surrounded by a plastic collar. Just grab the collar and pull it out of the body. The first time I removed mine, it took a rather hard pull to remove it. Possibly it hadn't been removed since it left the factory. I believe you can plug the electric cable release into the second front socket and use it without the need to remove the button. Maybe someone else can confirm my memory on this. Yes, the ELX is wonderful. I think the electric release button is one of my favorite things, and I generally hate anything electronic. I'm a die-hard mechanical camera, no batteries type person, but I have to compromise my principals for the ELX.

The larger, square release plate is difficult to remove.
There is a small slot, on the right hand side, near the top, in which you can insert a small screwdriver or such to get it started enough to get a good grip on it and be able to pull it out with your fingers.
Do resist any temptation to use the corner of a dark slide to pry it off. It will bend. I know it will...

Len and Q.C. -- I have the square bracket type release and will try the small screw driver... so do I just pull it off then? I, too, like mechanical devices but I'm really excited about using the new double flash grip and the electronic cord release that I have as well. Thanks, gents.

Norman,

Yes, the entire thing should just come out straight.
No other moves or tricks needed than the thing with the screwdriver, if you can't get enough purchase on the thing to get it done with your fingers alone.

Insert the tip of the blade of a small screwdriver into the slot, and lever the thing up a bit. Don't use too much force, and don't try to pry it out completely this way (by applying force to just one side, you will tilt the thing, but it needs to come out straight): just get it started on its way out , then get a grip with your fingers on both sides.

Russ,

Yes...
